Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need Your Help Vacuum Pump Removal

HI I need you help on vacuum pump removal . i have a oil leak on it just wondering how big of job it is and some pointers on the eazyest was to do it

just did this on my 06 dont know how different they are but mine took 25min 3 bolts 1 hose clamp just release belt tention unbolt reinstall vacuum pump from cummins was 88. 00 + 13. 00 freight

Sorry but it is a little more difficult on the 24v. , but still not too diff. there is 4 bolts to remove it from the power steering pump, and then two to seperate it from the block. The part that I had the most difficulty with was getting the lower intercooler hose off.

A lot of people will say that taking off the power steering pump first works better. But I found that when I took them off seperate I had a leak. I also found out that the race that holds the seal in the pump was worn out. They also have a new updated seal for that pump. Its time consumming but not to bad.

I found it easier to remove both as one unit then remove the vacuum form the power steering pump. I never messed with the intercooler hose but to each his own if you want to tackle that monster. It took me about 2-3 hours to remove to fix it and mine still has a small drip every now and then. One thing to watch for is putting them back together, be sure there are no burrs or anything that will cut or tear the new seals.

CDenton - - It took an old man about 2. 5 hours to swap out the vacuum pump - - take vacuum and PS pumps out as a unit - - - there is a brace on the back of the PS pump that is a pain but doable - - - for the price of an aftermakret PS pump consider replacing it also - - - the pump is less than $100. and I hate to do it all over again - - my truck had 130,000 miles on it when the vacuum pump started leaking.

Yup, pull it off as 1 unit.



Also loctite the bolts when you reinstall. I put a new p/s pump on the truck and the seal started leaking later on. When I went to replace that, the pump was barely held one because the bolts had all backed out.



Bolts fell out of my starter too after I put new contacts.

well I need to tackle this same project already got the pump $580. 00 and I'm thinking of getting a new ps pump while I'm at it, why not replace both while under the hood but need to call to get a price on that.

Is the timming effected by removing and installing the vaccum pump?

No, the gear that drives the Vaccum pump does not effect your timing. Anyway there would be no reason to crank you engine when its removed. Disconnect both battery cables
