I just had a friend come by my house tonight and told me that he accidently put 2. 5 gallons of gasoline into his rear tank on a 97 PSD. #ad
The tank holds 20 gallons. He told me that after the gas was put in, He completely filled the tank with diesel fuel. Any opinions? I told him not to use the rear tank until I polled you guys. I am of the opinion that some small precentage(10%)won't hurt. Some car manufactures say to use up to 10% for sub zero weather. And no it wasn't me that did this! #ad

If it was me I wouldn't use it,although I've heard that 10% is OK. Some of the damage caused by gas is the type you can't feel or hear right away, but it does damage things. What I'd do is sipion 10-15 gallons out, refill the tank(diesel this time),then add what was sipioned out 5ga at a time to the next couple of refills. Since your friend has two tanks it would be easy sipon 5 or so gallons out and add it to his front tank at each fillup. Cheap insurance

I agree with Bill don't use it. And in a power stroke I would siphion it all out and use it to burn weeds with it. The injector pumps on the power stroke won't be as forgiving as a P7100.

Easy way to figure it out.

Cost of a complete fuel system service, injectors, possibly a pump, filter, maybe a tow, downtime, etc. vs. one tank of fuel.

Does your friend feel lucky.

Not worth the risk to me.

Back when I was an owner operator, some guys did this on a regular basis during cold weather, as an "anti-gel" insurance.
I never did it though.
I dont think it'll hurt anything in our Cummins trucks. In a phord... who knows.
What I would do... Buy a good brand of 2 stroke oil(a quart should do it) put it in the tank, and hammer down.
Just my . 02

Don't chance it. We had a guy at work top of the company's F550 with gas, not sure how much, but it ruined injectors and the pump too I believe. I think the bill was $1600. +

like the Patriot says,,,,when I had my dump trailers,,,i used it as an anti-gel,,,in the old days Cat said it was ok to use,,,had many many miles on my engines and never had a problem... . although they were "real engines" not sure what it would do to a flower choke

The same thing happened to me on my first fillup. I called the dealer from that station. Thye suggested that I have it towed to them. I e-Mailed Cummins. Their reply was that no gasoline was acceptable.

When I was 18 I was hired by UPS. My entry level position was refueling UPS trucks. Some of the trucks required diesel, others gas. Both pump nozzles were side by side. One very busy afternoon I inadvertently put gasoline...
yes... anyway after 3 gal I "corrected" my mistake by pumping another 40 gal of diesel into the tank. Two days later the truck was taken out of service due to engine failure. Consequently, I was fired. Get the picture?

Do not use that tank of fuel! Do siphon sample from tank. Do take sample to local pipeline company or refinery in area. Ask them very nicely(we do this for people on regular basis) run a flash test and gravity on it. They can tell you if this fuel is out of spec or bad. If it is hot(most likely is)
siphon the whole tank and refill with good.
All it takes to contaminate is 10 barrels of gas in 10000 bbl tank! A barrel is 42 gals.

DON'T! I've had gas accidentally pumped into my diesel tanks in my boat. Pumping them out is ALWAYS the ONLY solution considered.

I have already seen what happens when a diesel is run on gas. It don't run hardly at all even mixed. It will have a hard time even moving. As somewone else said, drain it and use it on the weeds. Gas will kill the injection pump. Steve Fyfe

On the Diesel Page a guy mixed some gas in his diesel fuel but drove his truck anyway. Not too many miles down the road his 6. 5L TD suffered total engine failure. Upon disassembly it was discovered all of the pistons had gone into various states of meltdown, with the crowns of 2 pistons sticking to the cylinder head. I know we're talking Diesel Wannabe here, but can we say astronomical EGTs??

We had a PSD in the shop about six months ago that had some gas mixed in to the tank. It suffered severe HEUI damage and needed 8 new injectors (HEUI injectors aren't cheap) and still it had a funny noise to it when done. We think it toasted the pistons too. Guy was just interested in getting it to run again, signed a waiver of his rights to warranty of the job.

I'd get rid of the 'Mix" Find somewone who heats with fuel oil and give them a gift!! To or three gallons of gasoline in a tank of 275 (or large) gallons of #2 is acceptable to me. AS note above, that is too big a gamble for me One tank of fuel VS one engine.

Well Gentleman (and ladies if applicable), I and my friend GREATLY appreciate the feedback. Will go for complete drain(Even if it is just a Ford). Sorry I didn't get back with a reply but it's Christmas, I work for UPS and I 've been out on the road flogging a brown wagon all over the place. It's amazing THE TORTURE those UPS trucks take! They keep those trucks 25 years before they junk 'em. Hey Donley, Some real people pleasers, aren't they! #ad

I think those older UPS truck lasted a long time because they all used inline sixes. I have always wondered if they were Chevy 250s or Ford 300s or what? I'll bet a lot of them racked up some amazing mileage between overhauls.
