I have scored a possible 727/205 to trade straight across for my Getrag/205. The trade would be complete, incuding starters, etc.

I have a few questions before I make the deal.

1. What are the gear ratios in the 727? It is out of an '89 with 3. 07 axle gears. The transmission has been built and has a tight converter.

2. The transmission was before a Gear Vendors overdrive unit and will need a new tailshaft. Any thoughts on one being better than another. The reason I ask is that I am considering a 203/205 doubler.

3. How interchangable are typical 727 parts with the 727 behind the Cummins? I will need to replace the detent and would like to have a fully manual VB while I am in the process.

Thank you! I think the auto swap will suit me since I plan to spend time on the rocks, trails, etc.

Not too many gasser model 727 parts will fit the diesel application. The FSM tells us that they are the same base model with the diesel employing HD parts. Someone once told me the gas model will not bolt to the diesel engine adapter... ... ... .....

I would make sure the 727 was behind a Cummins first. It has no overdrive 1:1 3rd gear. Not sure the other ratios. The starters are the same, no need to trade them. Don't let a gasser 727 builder build your diesel 727. Sounds like a heck of a deal for the guy with the 727.

My only comment is... ... . sounds like you are building an offroader! I'm very happy with the performance of the 727 with 410s and 38" rubber. In the midwest I had plenty of torque, and grunt. I think in rocks the doubler idea is a good one, I too have been playing with that idea. However, the truck worked so well Memorial Day weekend, that I won't be changing much gearing wise.

Yes 307's/308's were the only gears for the most part that came with 727 equipped trucks. Too bad you don't get the GV unit. Now wait a minute, GV unit on the tail housing means its a 2wd unit, right? How are you going to make that work?

Maybe it's a "divorced" 205 (small driveshaft between trans and transfer case) I think those came with some earlier gassers... .

I'm not sure I would reccomend trading your 5 speed setup for a auto. . I've been kicking myself ever since I bought my W250 auto . . I nievely thought that since it was a 93 it had a lockup converter since everthing else did by that year. boy was I wrong. I've done a few mods to make my auto much nicer but it's not near as cool to drive as my bro-in-laws 92 5 speed. . I've got my sites on a 5 speed 92 right now. . No more autos for me. .

If you can get a chance , drive a 727/518 cummins first.....

The change to an auto is kind of a tough one, but I think it will be right for my purpose.

I may be wrong on the tail housing. Actually, I hope I am wrong. The 727 is off of an '89 Cummins 4x4. It was rebuilt about 30K back and the truck came to life after the build. It was definetely a dog before that.

Additionally, the weight of the vehicle will be significantly less than the original truck and I will likely never tow anything with it. Hopefully I can upload a few pictures of the project this weekend and give a better idea of what I am working with.

Thanks for the information so far!
