LOL guess I could have added that...went .20over with 03/04 style pistons, turned the crank .10,stage 2 colt cam, shorten the rods to lower the compression to 16.1 balanced everything. Cleaned the head up 425 head studs. Had my injectors gone through as well as had the tips changed to the 03/04 style by the BB1 guys. I'm running 62/13 turbo with my Smarty on level 1 for my breakin run. I'll have it dyno tuned after its broken in. Before with the BB1's it was a bit smokey I have virtually no smoke now. So far really liking the low end torque. All the machine work and shortblock assy was done by Bearing inc. in Portland.

I lowered the compression per recommendation of the engine builder. When you bore them out compression goes up. He felt with the bigger turbo more fuel ect...that lowering the compression would be a good move for longevity. This build is all about mileage and dependability. I actually forgot that I had changed the turbo out to a Fatshaft 62 .80 it was a bit soft on the bottom before without the Smarty but on level 3 it had nice spool up just a bit smokey. Now it pulls right from the bottom on level 1 with no smoke. I'll be taking it over to Source to be tuned on their dyno. My goal is mileage while towing. I currently average is about 12mpg towing 100% of the time. I'm hoping to gain a couple of mpg...time will tell.

Just one cyl with a broken ring. Everything looked shockingly good. Still had crosshatching in all cyl's the bearings looked great except the thrust bearing which was all but gone. The head was all but wore out. Seats where gone as well as the springs. The shop told me to keep doing what I was doing as the motor looked great inside considering the miles.

It's so nice to have a truck......with a REAL diesel engine that's worth rebuilding. I wouldn't consider rebuilding anything Ford has on the market and I'd probably think really hard before dumping a bunch of money into a Duramax.

Thanks for sharing your info with us on your truck!

...The AC setup in these trucks suck...LOL

If you ever have to remove the HVAC box, remove the screen that restricts airflow to the panel and defrost vents, replace the crappy foam gaskets with 1/2" thick weatherstripping, and change out the crappy plastic doors with doors from Blend Door USA. I also plumbed in a heater core bypass. You'll have a hard time believing that you are in the same truck.

Just came in from her maiden voyage. 11K under her belt and she pulls like a freight train! I Love this thing. First 10K I ran on level 1 on my Smarty then kicked it up to level 3 the last 1K. Best tank was 14.9 mpg worst was 11.0mpg. Not bad for a fresh motor on winter fuel.

Figured I'd give an update....Been driving the wheels off it.
So I'm right at 100K on the new engine. I'm averaging 13.6mpg towing 100% of the time. We drove it to Colorado for vacation and did 4 tanks over 20mpg running 70mph. The bottom end pulling is amazing.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST ENCOURAGING THREAD I HAVE EVER READ. :)
