In recent months the cummins is not catching to life as quickly as it used to, and occasionally will just crank with out catching at all. It fires right up with a shot of starting fluid.

Is this a sign of injectors failing?

No codes are shown, and the clock reads 171K

Just bought mine with 190K. Not looking forward to such a high priced maint item out of the starting gate... ... ... ... ... .

Cerb we are really starting to see these third genners starting to need injectors .

Have for a while from a 10k view, but, a lot more are showing as the mileage hits that magic number. Around 200k, +/- 30k, the lack of good filtration and lousy fuel is taking a toll.

Filtration, filtration, filtration. Can't say it enough times. Should effectively double the normal lifetime barring catastrophic issues.

Dfrank: have been down this path last year using starting fluid even in summer to get a 2003 cummins going. It's time to replace injectors. they leak enough to prevent pressure build up to fire until its running which then the higher engine speeds creates more pressure to run on its own.
