I am a firefighter near pittsburgh, PA. I have all kinds of lights on my truck for responding to calls. It sees that my truck gets used alot to block roads. Nothing like dropping your truck off at the station and taking a fire truck just to see right behind you one of your brother firefighters grapped your truck to help out. But anyway my truck could be on scene for long periods of time. I know it is not good to idle for long periods of time. How can I protect from this. all ideas are welcome. thanks everyone. Sorry for the long story.

Get one of those automatic shut-off units. Don't remember what its called or where to get it (do a search), but I do remember that you can "program" it to idle for only so long. I belive 5-10 minutes.

Thanks for your service (firefighter)

You can also get a remote start, It not only starts your vehicle but you can use your remote to shut if off and if you forget the remote start times out after 12 minutes and shuts it self off.

i think your question is pertaining to the long idle period that it will be used for to keep the all the extra lights you have from killing the batteries ?

if this is the case one of the members , cannonball has a small company called pratical solutions , he sells a hi idler kit , its adjustable , you can turn up up the idle rpm to keep the engine warm and keep at bay the tar ansd carbon that builds up on the valves and does damage .

if this is not the case , pull the engine fuse ...

I installed the "Turbo Diesel Life Saver Timer" device that allows you to input (by pressing a button) the number of minutes after you have stopped driving to leave the engine running. Press once for one minute, twice for two minutes, 10 times for 10 minutes, 11 times for 20 minutes, etc... you get the drift.

The purpose of this timer is to allow your EGT's to fall down before turning off the engine. I usually hit it 4-6 times, take out the keys, and leave the truck. It will shut down as described above.

I also use the remote starter which would disallow someone 'borrowing' your truck without the remote or keys.

One product is called Turbo Life Saver, I think geno garage carries it. I helped Katdiesel put one on his truck,it's really easy. Hope that will help you:D

I know what you mean.

I am in the same situation as you. Extended idling to run lights. I use my exhaust brake to keep my cyl. temps up. But also, depending on your setup, you can shut down the truck and run the lights for a little while without too much trouble. But I would reccomend the high idler or using an exhaust brake.
