Hey guys,

I need some input on nerf bars. I have an 81 year old grandfather that loves to ride in the truck, but has trouble getting into it. So I am trying to find a nerf bar, or a step. I would love to find something that is removable. I saw something before that had pins in it. and it just kind of slid them in and put the pin in. I want something that will last a long time. Let me know what you all have, and your thoughts. Thanks.

Mike

I have nerf bars on my CJ7... when wet or in mud, they are VERY slippery. Mine do not have a flat step. I would use caution with this type if you are using them for an 81yo.

Mhindman,

I have the westin nerf Bars. They are not removeable but I like them and I have gone off-road with them. they help protect the rocker panels when you break over a hump.

I have parents that are 69 and 70 and they have no trouble getting in and out.

hindman, Smittybuilt makes a nice set. These are bolt on without any drilling. I have my truck about 4 1/2" higher than stock. I am 6' tall and they help me get in. Had them on for 5 months now and the only thing I noticed is the SS scratches easy.

I have "Grizzly" double bend bars on my 4x. Drops an additional 4" at the step in. Great for older people but my girlfriend apprieciates the easier entry also. It's a shame though that I don't have to "help" her into the truck anymore... ... ... .

Hindman.

I bought mine at Pep-Boys and they were like $300 for the set.

They bolt to the body mounts. They have longer bolts that count for the extra thickness from the metal and then there is a support strap that has self-tapping screws. a friend of mine is 300 lbs and he stood on them with no trouble. solid!!:D

I too have the westin"nerf" bars.

I like them and it makes it much easier for anyone regardlesss of age to get in. I beefed up mine a little, I took off the plastic insert and replaced it with 1/8" diamond plate steel and then had the whole thing Linexed. This was a few years ago, I had them mounted on a 99 and keep them when I traded. The linex gives alittle extra traction to folks getting in or out.

pic of step

Do you have a picture of the step with the diamond plate-sounds just like what I want. How did the plastic step insert come off?

My bars had screws holding the inserts in. I had them on my 99 2500 and keep them when I traded. I was cleaning them up to paint them and found rust and sand under the insert, that was the main reason I welded diamound plate on them. I had the Linex guy spray the bars after he did my truck. It cost me a $100 to get them sprayed.

As far as pictures my wife and family is up in Va this week with the camera. I will be going up there Thursday morning and will try and post a picture from up there.

See Ya

Chris

My Dad got the Go-Rhino Sumatra 6000 series nerf bars for his 2001 Quad Cab.

They are polished stainless and the run from wheel well to wheel well. Also they have a extra set of steps (6 total) at the back, so you can step onto to reach into the bed of the truck behind the cab.

The nerf bars you want are made by Warn (you know, the winch people. They make a set that has a quick release so you can take the off whe you want/need to. Not sure on cost. Never sold any. Everybody loves Westin of Smittybilt.
