I am in the market to put on either nerf bars or running boards on my 06 dually. They are going to be black so I can resurface them when needed with Line-X. I want either form to go wheel to wheel. Tough country sells a very nice running board in black (costly!).

Please chime in as to pro's or con's on either type and what you have and if you like them. All comments are appreciated.

Thanks everyone. Great site!

I had running boards on my previous '04. 5 and stainless nerf bars on my new '06. The running boards do a better job of protecting the lower door and side panels from debris, dirt and rocks coming up from the road. Running boards also hide the lower pinch seam. Front wheel mudflaps help keep the front wheels from throwing up mud and grime onto nerf bars. It is easier to clean the lower door and side panels with nerf bars. Running boards are often fitted directly against the truck's sheet metal and can trap dirt and grit between the seal and the painted surface. As the running board flexes over time it will scratch the paint. Not really a major concern if you plan to always have the running boards installed. For me the nerf bars were much easier to install and I personally like the looks. As long as you get a quality product in either it really just depends on which you like best. If you get nerf bars make sure that they have heavy duty and secure rubber step pads.

I really liked the running boards on my Expedition, but they were made for the truck. Built in lights, style designed for the exact fit of the vehicle, holes were factory drilled and painted. I got Nerfs for my 06 QC because you can put them on easily without drilling any holes and you can buy a nice stainless nerf for under $250 a set.

I got these:http://truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/buffalo-bars.htm

They look better than I thought and they really help my wife get in and out. Took about 1/2 hour to put them on in the dark. I'll try and remember to take a pic.

Spelling edit.

Nerf Bars

Thanks for the information. I agree that the running boards seem like a better option, but maybe the nerf bars would surfice. Maybe a four inch nerf bar? Putco has a nice four incher nerf bar that looks like a good choice. I'll let you all know. If I ever get a digital camera, I'll take one for all those that are in the same shopping situation.
