Friday Humor - It Isn't always what it Appears!!!

I figured it all out!

Hi all.

Is there such a box out there that can be connected to a peer to peer Windows network as a file server? Looking for something cheap & lightweight.

I'm using a laptop for the task now. It's heavy to be taking on the road. Just something w/o a display & keyboard, small, would be the trick.

Yes there are boxes out there that only have two connections, power & network cable. They are call Network Attached Storage (NAS) basically a box with a hard drive and network card, fairly portable. Now to the problems; finding one that is cheap and uses peer to peer for the network is going to be some doing. I have never heard of one that uses P to P, that doesn't mean they are not out there.

I think he means TCP/IP[netbios] or Netbeui as the peer method.

Forrest, if the above line is true, you can use one of these boxen to get the job done. .

 Jerry ... thanks much.

That little Combo USB 2 Ethernet 2. 5" HDD NAS Server Drive 80GB FTP sure fits the form factor, weight, etc. I see it's Linux based. Might make for some compatability issues, but it'll be rock solid reliable.

I'll dig around ... thanks again.

Linux based has no bearing in this case. It is invisible to the network. Linux is actually a much more stable option than winbloze. The only thing better in this situation would be a firmware/rom based option which may make for problems with upgrading. The linux setup on the nas box would prolly be very simple menu based.

What are you doing with this box? might be able to give ya some pointers with more info. pm is fine if thats better fer u. .
