Need help with old Cummins VT555-M

As some of you may remember I work for a utility company who gave me a 2003 Ford F350 4x4 6spd for my work truck. I am it's only driver.

I have done two other reports on this vehicle (search my posts). As the truck just turned 150,000 miles I figured it was time for another update.

With the exception of several alternator failures, well actually one failure and two junk rebuilds that only lasted days, I have had no further mechanical issues with the truck. Oil consumption is still zero (Delo 400 15-40 every 3,000 miles) Mileage is still ok 17. 5 mpg @ average 75mph, 10500lb truck with utility body and 3:73 gears. Low rpm power (below 2,000 rpm) still sucks. I have adapted to how I have to drive this vehicle so I am still on the original clutch and am at about 35% brake wear on original brakes (superior driver) No new squeaks, creaks or groans.

All in all the truck continues to give reliable service and is quite comfortable. I still plan to ask for a Dodge for my next work truck but I really can't whine about how this one has served so far. From reading all the horror stories about the 6. o and my sons experience with his 03 6. 0 now traded in, I guess I got lucky and got a good one.

Thanks Sage,

Last I heard, from the honest Fraud owners is, it's 50/50 chance of getting a good one!

I wonder how the 6. 4 is gonna do?:-laf

Just came off a cruise ship Sunday.....

Got to know a guy from the Fort Worth area (we talked camping alot), he has a 6. 0 with about 60,000 on it that has 3 new engines in it. In fact it was in the shop while he was on the cruise for #3.

He said when he got home he was going to hitch the fifth wheel and test it in the arkansas mts, if it failed he was going to trade it on a 6. 4... ... .

I asked if he had considered a Cummins and he said the Dodge's were not fancy enough and didn't have the available options he needed... ????

I understand the Ford dealerships have recently spent big $$$ upgrading and remodeling their service department waiting rooms - maybe that's what he was referring to... :-laf:-laf

Friend of a friend's 04' 6. 0 is in the shop waiting on it's second turbo. Truck has 40k original miles.

It's good to hear from someone with a positive experience with the 6. 0. I wish you continuing good luck.

My friend has a 2003 6L that was very good, reliable for almost everything he did. He put 65k on it, mostly around town, occationally towing his goose, never beat on it, never burnt out, never raced anyone, nothing.

Thennnnn... . I got my Cummins at the same time he started working at the same place I do (November). As I learned about the Cummins and what makes it great, I started busting his nuts about his Stroker and what makes it suck. The Variable Vane turbo was one of my favorites to bring up.

So then..... he got mad about me having a truck thats 8 years older and still faster, so he bought a Bully Dog 80hp programmer for it. About a week ago I saw him and we were both rompin on our trucks together as we went through downtown. He called me the next day telling me his turbo went.

In conclusion, I feel that the 6. 0's are great if their perfectly maintained, never romped on, and cannot be juiced up. But otherwise, you cant do anything with them.

I also know a guy with an 05 with 45k on it, his father's got a 05 Cummins so their kinda having a horsepower war. tThe stroker's faster by 3/10's of a second, but has been through 2 sets of headgaskets, 2 rear end rebuilds, and a transmission. The Cummins hasn't broken anything like that.
