Picked up a 2015 3500, SLT, 4x4, long bed, auto, 5th prep, crew, this week. This truck replaced my 1995 2500, club cab, 4x4, SLT with 270,000 miles on it and will be used mostly to tow a 10,500# 5th wheel. Did a nice test drive in the Olympic National Park, up the mountain to Hurricane Ridge. A total of about 150 miles, round trip from my place.

A few observations from my first week:

This truck is a BEAST. Had it weighed and it's a full 1200+ pounds more than the '95. I'm guessing that 25 pounds of that is all the extra RAM badges, 50 pounds for heavier springs, and most of the rest is emissions control stuff. It will take some time to get used to where the edges of the truck are; the front hood appears to be at least 4" higher that the '95.

The exhaust brake is great. Barely touched the brakes the whole way down the mountain. Even in 'auto mode' it's a bit aggressive for me in normal driving, but the 4 wheel discs are way better that the '95 brakes, which was maybe the worse feature of that truck.

Super quiet! Not just the motor, but driving down the road at 55mph it may be quieter than my 2014.5 Camry.

Plenty of power. The real test will be when I hook up the 5th wheel, later this week, and pull a few local hills and try out the integrated brake controller.

Tow mirrors don't appear to be that good and they make the truck 7" wider than the '95 (99.5"), which means I'll have to fold them it at some drive-up ATM's, but at least they fold in electrically. Mostly just need to get used to them.

I do worry about future maintenance costs. I did almost all the work on the '95. Fuel filters are about 3 times the cost and there are twice as many, and they will need more frequent changing. My yearly cost just for fuel filters will go from about $17 to well over $200. After looking around a bit, the new truck fuel filters may actually be easier to change than on the '95; that would be nice.

Dash gauges are nice. Many choices to display, including the usual stuff plus oil temp, trans temp, turbo boost, trailer brake info, and more.

Rear camera is great. I can see the rear stinger and put the ball within a 1/2" of where I want it. It is also a help in parallel parking.

You'll get used to the new mirrors eventually. I eventually got mine where I liked them after playing with the position of the blind spot mirror. I admit I didn't realize they moved when I first brought the truck home. :) When they're up, they're a bit narrow for my liking, particularly with the dually hips and I tend to mostly use the blind spot mirror, except when going around corner where I will use the upper glass more. That's a run-on sentence but I'm tired and too lazy to re-word it. haha

Pictures taken on Ediz Hook? Is the truck Max steel? Snoking

I just picked up my 2015 3500 SRW w/ Aisin, Bighorn pkg., etc. on Friday. Traded in the 2012 under the buyback incentive program. Definitely some improvements, even over the 2012. Especially liking the improved fuel mileage. I have the backup camera (tailgate) as well as the cargo/bed camera. I should be set to easily connect to all my trailers!!

SNOKING:
You are correct on both. Ediz Hook, Port Angeles and truck color is Maximum Steel: We've decided to call it dark gray because no one knows what the heck max steel is.

BTW: My first mod was to take out the back head rests. They were huge and blocked most of the rear view and no one rides in the back. RAM needs to design a headrest that stores flush with the back seat and pulls up when needed. Next mod will be to find a locking fuel door and then a front hitch. The hitch I'm considering will fill the space between the tow hooks, which needs something to keep out the rocks, but I worry about blocking air flow.

Also getting complaints from wife about the big step up into the cab. Since she talked me into the new truck I'll try to find something. I don't want running boards, but would like to find maybe a 4" wide by 12" long step that bolts on. Any one have any ideas on this?

They could install rear head rests like my '14 Durang. In the 8.4an screen, under control, there's a button to fold the headrests. They're spring loaded and release quickly. I sometimes can't resist the temptation of releasing them when my two pre-teen kids are in the third row arguing. :) :) :) True story.

" In the 8.4an screen, under control, there's a button to fold the headrests. They're spring loaded and release quickly"

Are you serious?

You will come to love everything about your new truck "except" IMHO I hate the rear view in the mirror! Also think the bed cam is useless.

Since you have the hitch prep get this! B&W RVK3600

Landshark, I also didn't want tube steps again, so got the 'Stirrup Steps' from Ram. 14" wide with 4 in. step section. No drill installation. Took all of 15 mins. to install. $155/pair.

Cummins12v98: My B&W RVK3600 (base only) should show up tomorrow. I'll use the top from my old B&W setup.

Yes, they are a dealer item. You can check them out on the Ram truck accessories website. Come in black or natural aluminum. I have the part no. written down somewhere in case you can't find them. I'm also curious-- I'll need just the base for my B&W fifth wheel hitch as well. What is just the base running cost wise?

wyosteve: I found them on ebay for about $125 delivered.

The new B&W base is $625, including free shipping. Seems crazy high until you see that it weights 125 pounds!

Received my extra Ram manuals today. Should keep me busy for a few evenings.
Ram Owners Manual - 861 pages
Ram Diesel Supplement - 341 pages
Uconnect 8.4A Manual - 419 pages
Ram Warranty - only 40 pages

The B&W puck base arrived and is installed. Did a 20 mile test drive with the 5th wheel to test the brake setup; it works better than the Prodigy P3 in the '95 RAM, and the exhaust brake is a plus.

Discovered that the high idle feature works. One of the various manuals says that it must be dealer activated!

Mine didn't require dealer activation either....unless that is something the dealer here just does automatically.
