3 days old with 375 miles service light comes on saying service the exhaust DEF.. Is this normal? I'm new to this stuff because my 2001 Cummins never used this crap.
still runs and drives normal. Can this in any way hurt it to keep running??

It is new so may have had a failure. It is not normal and once fixed should be fine. Have your dealer take care of it. My 14 and 15 have not had any issues with emissions but some do out of the box. There are many systems that have to work together and even small issues may trigger a light. Also, some have had codes thrown just because of the time the truck spent sitting on the lot without being driven. For example the def could just be old and out of spec. You may also find the code clear itself over the next few key cycles. If it were mine i would use the truck and monitor its performance while i got the dealer to look at it. Good luck.

Well guys took truck in this morning and had good news. There was nothing wrong just needed 4 new bcm flash up dates... I don't see why everyone doesn't drive a Dodge Ram !!!

It's too bad your dealer didn't check it for the flashes before they delivered it. They are supposed to check for recalls before delivery and it would only take a couple of minutes to check it.

Mine didn't either.

I had the same issue today, display said service DEF see dealer(I have about 700 miles on truck). I didn't get to excited because there was no check engine light accompanying the message. After 4 restarts the message went away. It has been very cold around here lately, maybe some ice build up in DEF line that eventually cleared it's self. I guess time will tell!

I've got 28K trouble free miles on my truck. After refilling my DEF about 7 or 8K miles ago, I got a DEF error message. My Edge CTS automatically clears codes, so the code cleared and never came back. I think the trucks are a little finicky over things, but they don't actually cause any problems. Love this truck, its my first diesel truck.

On my new 2016 3500 6.7 the DEF gauge did not start to drop off till after 2k miles. I waited till it got almost to the red empty line and bought 2.5 gallons from Wally World for around $7-8 bucks. That amount brought it back to the full mark ,but their is another reserve amount on top of that for more DEF. Think it is a 4- 5 gallon tank. I use DEF in all the new CAT heavy equipment at work. Good rule is to use all of the contents of the container when filling. Never use a previous opened container. Not worth the trouble if it was contaminated. Just my 3 cents

Seems to be the common theme here. Got the same warning twice after filling the DEF tank.

One other thing to think about when getting the DEF warning.......the climate in which you operate. I see this message every time the temps drop below zero. I rarely drive the truck long enough for the tank to thaw and the truck will give the message nearly every day. It's just what happens when the DEF tank is a frozen ice cube.
