Ok guys I just took delivery of my "new" '02 QC 4x4 Auto Sport SWB. The deal was to good to pass up so I just bought it. Everything seems to be in great condition no tinkering any where that I can find. But I am a 12v owner so I am used to looking for things that are mechanical and I am not very fluint with the electronic things let alone all the changes that are found in the 24v. So gimme a run down on things to check out, things to watch for, and so on. I know all the things that can be done to BOMB it but seeing as how this will be the wifes truck I am not looking to do such things right now. More or less I want to make it as bullet proof as possible for her as a daily driver.

TIA

Get yourself a fuel pressure gauge first thing. That is the most common failure, and can be the most expensive (out of warranty) if not taken care of. The steal... dealers are real proud of that VP44. The track bars get cranky occasionally, and the bumpers are a joke.

Other than that, change the oil, keep fuel in it, and check back with us at 100k miles.

Congrats on your new toy, or rather your significant others.

P. S. Would someone please talk to my wife and convince her about the joys and benefits to owning a CTD? If I could just get her to drive someones 2500 auto with the modified transmission and some mild (yeah right) power bombs that might swing her.

Sticks

Too bad you are so far away. I would let her drive my truck. It's not lightly bombed. Last time i had it on the dyno,i put 425 hp to the ground.

So you saw the light? and came to the overly valved crowd good for you. You (she) will like it I am sure. Have fun

Definitely get the FP gauge on ASAP A little more hp doesn't hurt the dependability much.

NO NO NO... . I havent "SEEN THE LIGHT". . lol... i am still a good ol' fashioned mechanical fan. But this truck is perfect for her, and time will tell if I will switch to the "DARK" side..... :D

I can say this, we took it out to show off to our friends last night, and while it runs very smooth, and quiet in the cab. It has been a VERY long time since I rode in a stock truck. The power is really very low. In comparison to mine. It will definetly need a little help. So I am going to renig on my original post about BOMBing it. So where do I need to look to get it about 50-70 HP? I dont want to "RUN" the truck, but I would like her to have a little giddy up and go. Like I said this is not going to be a take to the track or dyno monster. It's probably never going to haul anything bigger than a small pontoon boat. So just a little would suit her fine.

TIA

Cycle the key on and off three times. And you will see data displayed where the vehicles mileage normally is. These are trouble codes that the computers store. If you get any post them on this board and someone will be quick to let you know what they mean. In all likely hood though you wont get any, which is good.

Russell - As far a bombing goes you have two choices to get an extra 50-70 hp. You could add an Edge EZ (timing box) or you could do RV275 injectors. The RV injectors are less expensive but you have to install them. The EZ is nice because it plugs in and when you want it gone you can just unplug it.

If it where me I would go with the edge box, however the HO crowd is of the opnion that injectors make more difference.

Get her some gauges first... . then bomb it a bit.

I am thinking that the edge ez box is the way to go. But I have a question about air?. That TINY little HY 35 has got to go, it's almos imbarassing to see that little thing in there. . LOL... I do know that I can go to the HX 35. So my question is can the transmission hold an upgrade like that, and do I definetly need to put more fuel to it to make the turbo turn over properly? I hope that made since. Then if the transmission can not hold that kind of upgrade who should I talk to about a new TC, and or any other transmission upgrades I should need. LETS REMEMBER NO transmission WARS... :-{} I dont care whats better and not better. This is not a comp. truck.

TIA

Russell

The HY will be fine with the EZ box. Its actually a nice little huffer for a almost stock truck. It has almost zero lag and that is a good thing. As long as you are not going to tow a big pile it will be fine.

I ran my HY with 275 injectors and my PowerEdge box (fueling box) and it worked okay... I could see 1400 degs but that was with a fuel box.

If you want to replace the HY I would look at oner of Piers HX35's, simple bolt on replacemnt and very nice turbo.

As far as transmission Upgrades go, I favor DTT because that is what was availble when I got mine. I still like em because of there service and constant improvement of the transmission.

Guages - Keep an eye on the vitals

AFE or BHAF and 86 the muffler (keep the resonator though) - More air flow in and out will help with the EGT's

275 injectors or dd1's, and Edge EZ or Edge comp (no pump wire) - Her transmission may hold with both injectors and box, if she drives like grandma blue hair. Then when she needs to get on it, it will be there. You are probably safer to do one or the other then get the transmission work done.

You will need to do the transmission if you put the exhaust brake on.

This is what I have learned from reading and wishing. I have no hands on experience yet. JM$W
