South Bend Clutch has developed a new 2nd generation Heavy Duty Clutch for our 2001 6-sp. I have reported to you on their 1st generation clutch which is capable of handlying 400+HP and 900+FLB of torque at the rear wheels, which I have Dynoed and is installed on my truck. Their 2nd generation clutch kit has a Luk original equipment pressure plate that has been altered to increase the pressure without increasing the clutch effort. This also changes the stroke of the clutch petal causing the clutch to engage smoother. The drive disk used in the kit is also Luk orginal equipment. They have changed the clutch facings from organic to a much higher torque carbon based metal lining to accommodate higher horsepower trucks. Another advantage to these particular metal linings are that the clutch system does not loose the cushioning effect that make a clutch feel smooth when it engages. For those of you considering upgrading your clutch because of "bombing" I would highly recommend you contacting "Peter" at South Bend Clutch 800-988-4345 for more information. I plan on installing in the near future the 2nd generation clutch and let you know how it truly performs. If it's better than the !st, it will be a winner!!! By the way pricing will be much cheaper than the Mcleoad, Sachs, or other clutches presently on the market for high performance trucks.

Nice post. Can you give us a ball park (non-quotable) price for this puppy??Joe

HeberRam... good post on the Southbend. I could not wait and just had a McLeod installed by Auto Wurks Diesel (thanks Mike). I am very happy with the Mcleod. The pedal pressure is the same as stock, IMHO. There is very little idle chatter, you really have to listen for it over the engine clatter, and I cannot detect any chatter in direct drive (5th for me). As I see it, the price is the only drawback to the McLeod. Maybe some competition will help in that area.

Papa Joe... As I understand, the price is around $800+. When they go into full production the price will probably drop a little.

Bigsaint. . Glad your Mcleod is working for you. It appears we now have some manufactures very intrested in solving our clutch problem. I think with time, competition will help us and bring prices down.

I will be ordering this new South Bend Clutch and will keep you guys informed as to my test results.

HeberRam how long before you put the clutch to use? I am very interested I gave Southbend a call and they seem to be real nice to talk with now lets see how the clutch works.

Joe isn't going to like this but I have there highest HP clutch come for mine. Peter told me that it uses the Sachs pressure plate with their brass pucks.

I ordered my new 2nd generation clutch from South Bend today. Costs for the clutch was $850. 00 plus shipping. This clutch is a full ceramic disk which is a little different then the 1st generation Which I currently have. The one in my truck now is a ceramic button type and can be purchased for about $700 plus shipping. By the way, Peter at South Bend informed me that they have 3 or 4 different clutch combinations now for the 5-speed. I am very hopeful that this new clutch will take care of 99% of us pushing 375-425 Hp at the rear wheels. Some other posts regarding Mcleod, Joe Donnely's modified Sachs costs a lot more and cause chattering, high foot pressure, engagement problems Etc. I believe we shouldn't have to put up with these problems and hopefully, this new clutch will provide us with a more stock like performance. I'll keep you posted on my results after getting installed and re-Dynoed.

Bpine... I plan on installing the new clutch this Friday and I'll probably have some info to share with you next week.

drawson I was told there new clutch was a Sachs pressure plate with a special organic material with a type of spring plate behind the clutch material. Can you also get brass pucks as well? or is what I was told not the right info.

HerberRam do you have your clutch in hand and is it really a luk pressure plate.

Bpine... Awaiting UPS shippment due Thursday. . Haven't seen yet, however, for the 2001 6-sp, Its suppose to be a beefed-up LUK clutch with ceramic facing. Southbend does make a Sachs and others for the 5-speed. Call Peter at SouthBend for more info...

Bpine, Peter told me monday that this clutch they are sending me is new and that it was the highest HP clutch they have for the 5 speed. I haven't gotten it as of yet but when I do I'll try and get a picture of it on the site.

Thanks for the response guys I have been setting on the clutch fence to long , I just want to explore all the options before I jump in. Poor old Red want more power but if I give her any more the clutch is gonna blow! lol

Ok guys just put in South Bends newest 6-sp clutch today and all I can Say is "WOW"-"WOW"-"WOW" and I'm not talking Indian. This is it!!! #1. no chatter at all #2. shifting smooth as silk. #3. no netural grind. #4. Stock like petal pressure. I'm running 400+HP and 900+ torque at rear wheels and NO and I repeat NO slippage. Peter at South Bend probably won't like this remark, however, this second generation clutch makes my first generation South Bend (which worked) seem like a Viper compared to a UPS truck!!! This clutch is a real "WINNER". . Anyone who wants to upgrade their clutch, should do so from South Bend. Call Peter at South Bend #800-988-4345. I have driven a Mcleod, Joe Donnely's modified Sachs, Luk pro gold etc. This clutch "eats them up"... in performance and costs!!! I guess from my post you can tell I'm real excited, because I am no longer frustrated in getting the power to the ground.

Thanks again Peter and the guys at South Bend!

Here are the picture of my new clutch

HeberRam, are there any vibrations to speak of when you romp on it? I get a little disconcerting vibration under heavy throttle that I believe is part of the clutch slipping (stock) problem.

Dee,

Joe's disk has TWICE the lining of the Southbend unit. I wonder which one will hold the most torque?

Who are you going to get to install it? Clay at Carrigan Motors in Morgan is sure cheap and FAST. He's the one who's installed HeberRam's clutches. If you're doing it yourself, I'd like to come and add support.

Benson. . There is no vibration whatsoever. as far as knowing when you're clutch is slipping it usually starts in 6th-gear when you romp-on it and you will notice the RPM's climb (and sound) real fast and the truck is not acellerating as fast. It gets progressively worst and starts doing it in 5th-gear etc. With only a fueling box or injectors you're probably be "OK" with the stock clutch. However, when you start "bombing" more than that it will be a matter time and you will start noticing slippage. If you romp-it and you're not in the right gear, this may be the viabration you are talking about and would indicate
slippage. Don't lug the engine shift down.
When you need a replacement clutch, I highly recommend South Bends. You won't be disappointed... Eat you heart-out Bart!!

Drawson. . Bart's right I had my clutch installed by "Clay" at Carrigan Motors in Morgan. It took 1-1/2 hours.
