So what exactly is so different with the 04. 5 engine and the 04 engine other than increases HP and torque?? Can someone please give me the lowdown??

Well, I heard that instead of making any changes to the engines, DC and Cummins took a lesson from the ricers: they will be including a couple new stickers on the 04. 5 trucks. A big "APC" sticker on the tailgate gets you 20 hp, and an "MSD Ignition" sticker on the rear window gets you 45 ft-lb. :-laf

Press Release Source: Chrysler Group With real-world customers in mind, the re-designed 5. 9-liter Cummins "600" powerplant not only meets 50-state emissions requirements, but was designed to be even tougher with premium exhaust valves and seats, high-strength exhaust manifolds, gallery cooled pistons and an oil bath turbo system.

I don't see that these changes quantify the hp/tq increases, but may help? I suspect the bulk of the increases come from programming, and if they are now using a VGT that may attribute to the lower RPM tq increases.

I heard from a very reliable source, that the HP/TQ increase was due to using a synthetic blinker fluid and 3/16" ball bearings in the muffler. :)

no Variable vane turbo, unless the engine comes with EGR. no EGR = no fancy turbo.

DC told me the changes were:

different e manifold

different turbo

5" turbo to muff pipe

same muff

same 4" muff to tail pipe

sometimes I wonder if they know what they are saying but thats what they said...

I wouldn't be too excited about the VGT -- Cummins (the phone number that DC gives out) told me that its EGR itslef that requires VGT -- something to do with back pressure that makes VGT a requirement to support EGR.

yea, you might get better spool-up and a larger e housing at the same time (cake and eat it too) but imagine the ECM control and how much more difficult it will be to bomb. Lawrence at DD told me that the Ford VGT doesn't react very fast, so the fueling boxes can't actually spool them up as fast as you'd think was possible.

I don't know if the new numbers are real or marketing hype. All I know is my H. O. with an Edge goes like heck. I don't need no stinking '04. 5!

HP is a formula that is depends only on rpm and torque. nobody is going to change that formula without shaking the foundations of physics and engineering. peak HP is already a rather meaningless number because it always occurs at an rpm that is above where the engine develops peak torque, and such an rpm is typically higher than the vast majority of the driving conditions encountered on the street. folks just don't drive CTDs at 2900 unless they are showing off. and most don't pull at 2900 either unless they don't care about fuel economy.

remember that for any given gear. torque is what matters. HP is a don't care. and before you all come unglued, read the opening sentance several times first and repeat "for any given gear".

Torque is a measurement that is also defined very precisely. isaac Newton will be very disapointed if there is any change in what a foot pound or an Newton-Meter means.

When you see Cummins publishing 600 ft lbs of torque at 1600 rpm, then there is no ambiguity. The will measure it under optimum conditions, just like anyone else, and If they are lying, someone will sue.
