So what exactly is so different with the 04. 5 engine and the 04 engine other than increases HP and torque?? Can someone please give me the lowdown??

New engine has electronically controlled turbo wastegate, new injectors and upgraded software. Thats all, no EGR stuff!!!

My 2004 is one month old. Im not sorry I didnt wait for the 2004. 5 as this truck has all the power I need. Compaired to my 98 12v, this sucker pins you to the seat when you put your foot in it. I also like the 21 mpg I got between Oregon and Calif on my 2nd tank. I feel that they are going to push up the power to run all the smog stuff and everyone will wish that they had the 305 hp motor. I bought this truck with high hopes of keeping it for many years as the days are long gone that a guy could afford to go out every year and buy a new truck. With a sticker of $43k (only giving $34k for my truck OTD as there is NO sales tax in Oregon) it is more than my first house!. This is one beautiful truck and Its gonna be in my driveway a long time! My only regret is the 5 star dealer that I have to deal with. When I bought the truck, they went so far as to tell me that I "had to" give them all positive ratings on the survey card from Chrysler. I had to argue and fight tooth and nail to get the deal I got and they made me feel like I was taking their last dollar by getting the deal I got. I know I could have gone to Idaho and saved another $1,000 or so, but it just wasn't worth the drive or the crap I would get when I take it in for service at the local guy and getting put at the end of the line because I didn't buy from THEM. I feel Im in my final home as I have the home of my dreams and I think I need to have a dealer that will treat me right. I just hope all the things I hear from others in my area about this dealer isn't true. I guess time will tell. I just didn't like their sales team. I got turned 3 times before the sale was done. Very stressful! Im just glad I bought the ZERO deduct Chrysler bumper to bumper warranty that goes to 100k miles. Oil changes included (only at the local dealer). Yes, I love my new truck. I will keep you all posted if I start to fall out of love with it and the attitude of the dealer. So far, so good. I have referred them to a friend that wants the same deal as i got and will pay cash, yet I have yet to hear that they have sold him a truck. Hmmmmmmmm. :-{}

Someone over on the DTR site is reporting that the new system will have a cat, but no EGR. This seems to be consistent with what Cummins has displayed as new diesel emissions technology.

This is certainly an entertaining discussion. fun to speculate, to be sure. Everyone including me has their inside "reliable" sources, and what's really entertaining is that not all of those inside reliable sources agree!

I see someone is speculating that the new Turbocharger has an electronically controlled wastegate. Thats an interesting twist. what would be the purpose of changing the wastegate threshold? this is not the same as variable geometry or variable vane technology, so to see such technology on the new 600 would still be consistent with the VGT=EGR story. I wonder what the benefit is. For the bombers, I can think of a real disadvantage: more difficult to upgrade the turbo, and "ewe!" look at what the fueling boxes have to deal with now!

new injectors: This is consistent with the comments that I got from Cummins (the number Dodge gives out), who speculated that a larger, later fuel charge brought down the NOx. To me, this meant a larger injector. Maybe the new 600s will respond to fueling boxes pretty well!

upgraded software. yea. its all about controlling the combustion event -- timing, duration, and frequency of fuel charges. But if they are controling the turbocharger as well, watch out: bombs will be difficult, expensive and maybe illegal -- the turbo is part of the emissions controls, as is the rest of the exhaust system and of course the ECM itself!

no egr: thats certainly what I'm hearing as well. while Ford and Chevy muck with EGR, Cummins rides along without it. good going cummins. those that want to stay stock will have an awesome truck!

Some are reporting that there will be a post-cumbustion "CAT" like device, even though the DC call center told me just a muffler is in there.

And finally, no, I don't have any regrets about buying my 2004 early. At least our turbos are not tied into the ECM, injectors upgrades are reasonable, fueling boxes are available now, and the 2nd gen boxes are just around the corner. And the best part is that my truck is not subject to the new emissions regulations.

Couldn't it be possible that they've just raised the rail pressure and changed a couple things to control EGTs and make everybody think it's new and different?

Maybe they have been reading (and learning ;) ) here and are selling mildly pre-BOMBed trucks. :D

I'm with you LM6000, I can add a little box and get more torque/hp than corporate is ever going to release in an oem truck. But that extra room is AWFULLY expensive to add.

So anyone want to share more info / details / pics on the rumored larger crew cab?

i heard they just redefined how horsepower and torque are calculated so that they could have bigger numbers.

That sounds suspiciously like something that might come from a company based in Dearborn...

I don't see that these changes quantify the hp/tq increases, but may help? I suspect the bulk of the increases come from programming, and if they are now using a VGT that may attribute to the lower RPM tq increases.

iirc, the torque they are quoting is at a higher rpm isn't it? the 04 has claimed 555 @ 1400rpm and the 04. 5 has 600 @ 1600 rpm isn't it? [i am going off memory at this awful early hour of the morning]

when does the model go to 2004.5

hi guys,

Can you tell me the date when the model changes to a 2004. 5 model . I am trying to find a new 2500 4x4 long bed quad cab ,laramie ,black to import to Australia , i think i will have to order one from the factory , how long does it take from order ? i would be pleased if anyone can tell me a good dealer in Canada to deal with as it needs to be shipped via England to have the steering wheel put on the other side of the dash . any info would be much appreciated.

REGARDS CONN

Ive speculated that even with peak being 200rpm later. It will still be making damn close to 555 at 1400.
