Despite previous information that no friction modifier is needed when Amsoil gear lubes are used, they have released one. It's called "Slip Lock" and eliminates the chatter that you don't have.

Do I sense a bit of sarcasm. I just replaced my rear axle gear lube with Amsoil. I've got no chatter and today I thought that I had lost my LS. I found some dirt and gave it a test. I've still got my LS. Some have said that the Amsoil doesn't stop the chatter but most say that it does.

Depends on what the friction modifier does. If it reduces friction, then very few diffs will need it, since Amsoil series 2K gear lube is so slippery. Only diffs with the clutches set on the tight end of the spec *might* need the additive. With dino lubes, the modifier will almost definitely be needed.

The magazine also explicitly states that the Amsoil synth gear lubes don't need the additive.

So, if one doesn't have chatter with Amsoil synth gear lube, one clearly doesn't need the additive. But if, after 10K miles of driving using Amsoil synth gear lube, the diff chatters a bit, then a little modifier might be needed.

My Dana 70 LSD was setup to the extreme high end of allowable specs. (I know this by the amount of friction modifier I had to add when I was using Red Line 75W-140NS... no friction modifier added... I kept very exacting records on the amount added -vs- the percentage ratio). Regardless of what brand of high quality synthetic gear lube I use, I still have to add at least 2 ounces or more of a high quality friction modifier (only added as required for proper LSD functioning).

In fact, after work today I'm going to my Amsoil supplier to pick up a bottle of the new Amsoil friction modifier... I'm in the middle of a rear end project (rear disc brake copnversion) right now and will need to add new gear oil anyway when done.

BTW, after much experimentation with various 100% synthetic gear lubes, I've been the most impressed with Amsoil's Series 2000 75W-140... I use it in both the front and rear differentials.

When I called my supplier yesterday, he informed me that they didn't have the new product in stock yet but it had been ordered.
