New Aux Fuel Tank added

Just added this 26 gal. Tank for extra range when towing my big trailer.



I can remove it real easy. . I am going to look for quick disconnects for the hoses, then the tank comes out with 4 screws.



There is a Mechanical gauge on top and the feed hose "T's" into the line coming from the lower Aux tank.



So Now, I have, 34 gal. main, 18 Gal Aux in the spare area, and the 26 gal in the bed. I also have 5, 5 gal. Gas Cans that go in the front part of the bed.



All total , I have 104 gallons capacity... That ought to get me down the road a-piece.

On the cost of fuel, I do an automatic savings to save up to pay for fuel on a trip. . going to do a 2800 mile trip in July and a $4/gal. , it will cost $1400 just for fuel!!

This all sounds great, but how much $$ do you have tied up in auxiliary tanks. Reason I ask is that I'm thinking of doing something simular for our next trip to Alaska. It would be nice have enough diesel to get across Canada on US diesel, since diesel in Canada is always more expensive. Of course that would never happen because I would need to carry about 160 gals. I'm talking about taking the shortest route from Washington to Tok, AK by way of the Cassier Highway. Cost of the auxiliary fuel tank is a factor because it may just be cheaper to pay the higher price of fuel in Canada.

Same here. 66 Gal in bed tank. love it! For those that cringe about how much it costs to fill them up, you have to understand that we go about 1800 miles before we have to fill up again. It all works out about the same in the long run. Carrying the extra weight uses a small amount more fuel to get moving, but if you can wait and purchase during the "lows" and avoid buying when its high, or can buy it where it is cheaper (for instance we almost always plan our fuel usage so that the tanks will be low when we hit Kingman Az, just because it is usually much cheaper there than in L. A. or Vegas) and have saved as much as 40 bucks in the past (several times) and the tank has actually paid for itself believe it or not.

I bought a 100gal tank at tractor supply 300. 00 transfer pump 135. 00 put 7 prong plug that plugs in to my truck to pump fuel to my truck tank. It has payed for it self. In 3 years. I camp 4 month a year. From IN. to TX. to CAL. back to IN. so i look at the price of fuel when I get down half a tank. my tom tom helps me a bunch on prices.

Also, where is the cheapest place in your area for fuel, have to go to Bozeman Mt. tomorrow night, if I take the '93 I'll have a 55 gallon drum in the back for an aux tank. My '03 on the other hand already has a 100 gallon aux tank! Where you been running lately?

I got the tank at West Marine online... . http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...gory:Fuel Tanks&PopularCat=No&storeId=10001It is a below deck Tank (for boats) that is rated for Gas or Diesel. . It it pretty good, mounted to the bed pretty well.

The Pilot truckstop in Ogden, UT is usually the best price for getting it on the Interstate. Some Sinclairs and such are still at 4. 09 and others are up to 4. 15.

My partner and I drive the Doubles Fed-Ex truck to Harrisburg, Pa and back every week... . 4126 miles a week... . Glad Im not buying that fuel!!!

I really need to do an aux tank setup for my '98 because then I'd be able to road trip most anywhere in the Northwest and not have to refill before getting home. The advantage of this? I can make a load of my DSE veggie fuel and not have to carry it in containers in the bed and add to the tank at each fillup.

I'm cheap, I like MMeier's idea of a 55-gallon drum as an aux. tank although I know there can be risks with that, ie having it go flying in an accident. What do you have for your 100-G tank on the '03?

Eric how is your tank plumbed, do you switch from tank to tank, and how do you know when to switch it?

Vaughn, I picked up a 50 gallon tank at a scrap metal yard that was for a dump truck. One of the rectangular side mount tanks. It has all the necessary plumbing and a fuel gauge sending unit. It's low enough that it fits under my tonneau cover. I got it for $35.

I have the 2 hoses tapped into the other aux tank I have where the spare was... fluid and vent... there is a pump from that smaller aux tank to the main tank. . the 18 gal has a gauge in the cab and the other tank siphons down to the lower tank. . Also, when pumping it, it draws it from both at the same time... . so when the lower tank is empty, I know the main is all I have left... . I am able to haul up to 26 gal. in cans as my "Reserve"... that makes 104 gal total.
