i just got done putting on new brakes all the way around i had a abs light shuddering problem. i got the abs light fixed not from the brakes though. but the truck still shudders when im braking. it dosen't seem that bad but its still there. i got everything turned so nothing is warp but i dont know what else it could be. seems like it is coming from the front but i dont know for sure. could it be something in the front suspension. or the bearings in the hubs?

its a 1995 2500 automatic if that helps

It vibrated before with the old brakes and does it now after they have been turned? Easy, time for new rotors. When rotors warp, usually from incorrect torque hen applied heat, you can cut them flat, but the they will warp back to thier previous position or even worse. Usually, this happens as soon as they are applied and heat is generated.



While it will not hurt to check everything in the front end. That may not be the cause. My first hunch is the rotors.



It is also possible, although unlikely, that alignment can be the issue. But if it is that bad, toy would most likely notice it all the time.



I would jack up the front end, pull the tires, and check for run out. You do not need an expensive dial indicator for this. You can use a piece of coat hanger pinched under a bolt. be to be very near the surface of the rotor. And give it a turn. If you position the wire to the outer edge, it will be easier to see any run out. And you can use a dime, penny, nickel to measure the run out. Primitive, but it works.



Take your properly sized change to the parts counter and have them mic it. If the rotors are out of spec. replace them. Otherwise, you are beating yourself up!



I really like gas slotted rotors, as I have seen a few cross drilled units crack.

i would never have a rotor turned. its just not worth it. rust on the inside,less metal on the outside,more heat,less brake,warp,fade,etc..... one other thing i have seen cause a brake shudder is the fluid. you could try a brake fluid flush,and if it has been over a year it would not be a wasted effort. moisture build up in the fluid can cause problems.
 
Oil from your hands or a spec of grease on the rotor will also cause a shudder. If you have had your rotors turned more than once or you had someone that will turn them no matter how thin, it is time to have them replaced. I found that if you use an organic pad, the rotors will last a lot longer. While the metallic or life-time pads last longer, they generate so much heat that the rotors suffer. I have a 83 chevy I put new rotors on in 1991 with organic pads, have installed new pads several times but the rotors have never been turned in over 100k miles. The organics won't last as long as the metallics, but they are 1/3 the price and easier on rotors.
 
Hey LLeaton, do they shudder on every stop? Mine do that some too, but only when they've been heated up, like toward the bottom of a long grade. With my mileage I know its getting time to replace the rotors. I agree that with vehicles of this size turning the rotors isn't worth it.
 
i did some thinking last night and i remember that it didn't do it before i put the 2nd gen alloys on. so i did the test to see if it was the rear brakes that shuddered. ( step on the e-brake when going about 35 mph while holding the release up. ) and it still shuddered. so i put the stock wheels on the back and it was the nicest stop ever. i had wheel spacer (1/4 inch) on because it rubbed in the front. so i left those off and that was the problem. thanks for the help.

Check your shocks. I had a bounce/shutter i couldnt find. It turned out to be a bad shock on the back. I just put on a new set of blistens and its gone, hit the brakes and it stops

Broken belt in a tire... seen this twice on my dad's 99CTD... it will feel like a warped rotor when stopping, but still ride smooth.



One was a set of coopers, the other was a set of firestones.

My Dodge service manual says not to turn the roters at all. If there is somthing wrong with them replace them if not you can just put new pads on them.
