Got a quick ? about relocating the breather bottle on my 01.

I have done a bunch of research and it looks like I'm gonna run mine to the outside of the driver side frame infront of the wheel to get it way out of the way of the fan. Also seems easy to get to for maintenace. Would be plumbed with 3/4inch heater hose and hose barbs to get me there.

Here is the question.

I was thinking about making up a new "breather bottle" out of some PVC pipe and fittings. The catch can would have many holes in it for venting, would have an inlet from the blow by tube in the top and a release valve for draining oil in the bottom. It would be atleast the size of the original but prob bigger.

Anyone see any problems with this? Would prob use 1 1/2 pvc for the catch can, about 5 inches long, but may use 3inch if it would fit where I want.

Maybe in the next couple of days when I am off I will make up a prototype and post some pics to see what everyone thinks.

Let me know what you think,

Your idea sounds fine. Do you collect enough oil in the bottle now to warrent a drain? I ran mine down to the frame behind the cab. It's a long run and the last half is a pretty shallow drop. I change my sock every month because it's saturated enough to drip. My bottle droops at about 30*, it's not upgright. Once or twice a year I pull it off and there's rarely more than a drop or two to pour out.

Yeah that was the other way I was thinking about doing too, Gary, u always have good ideas and I like to copy you, LOL.

I really dont have that much blow by to "require" a drain, but thought that it would be kinda "trick" to have one. ALso to drain condensation or water that gets in during truck/engine washing etc. Plus that way I would never have to worry about removing the catch can its self to drain it, even though its not that huge of a deal to remove it.

Anyone think that there would be a problem with the PVC and the oil interacting, ie; the oil breaking down the PVC?

Thanks

The PVC should work just fine - post a pic when you get it done - one nice possibility with that setup, is that you could install a proper sized hose barb on the PVC tube you use for a good attachment at that point. ;)

Enough air flow?

I would love to relocate the crankcase vent tube on my '99 to get rid of the smell and also the dirt collecting on the radiator from the vapors. The reason I haven't is because I'm not sure what effect it would have on doing it's job... evacuating the fumes from the crankcase.

Before gas engines switched to PCV valves sometime in the 60s, all engines used a tube hanging down to vent the crankcase. The tube's location was important because the movement of the vehicle would create a low pressure area at the end of the vent and help pull the fumes out. While it didn't help when the vehicle was standing still, it's location was important. I'm curently building a set of headers for a gas engine pulling truck and the crankcase will be vented into the headers at a location of greatest low pressure. There are volumes written on proper placement of tubes on systems of this type.

By relocating the vent tube on my '99 Ram (not in the exhaust as stated above), what effect will its new location have on properly evacuating the crankcase? I wonder if the Cummins engineers located it in proximity to the radiator fan so air movement would assist at low vehicle speed or when idling?

I spent the BIG $$$ and went with a Walker Airsep and love it. The only problem was that it was designed for stock boost pressures and mine leaked oil out of the oil filler cap. There good customer service 1 call I told them what I was running for boost pressures and they custom made me a different check valved filler cap.
