A Move To Suspend CARB Diesel Regs?

I was looking at a new Case IH 8120 combine the other day and snapped this photo of it's lift pump and primary filter which is visible along the right rear of the machine... just inside the tire area. It uses a the typical Carter that causes so much trouble on 24V 2nd Gen trucks. I couldn't help buy notice it and say something here. BTW... this is a 450HP machine. Its a big one! 10 years has gone by and this darn pump is STILL being used as an OEM diesel lift pump.

Is that a 12 or 24 volt electrical system on that? They use the same looking pump on the bigger excavators, but they are 24 volts.

yep. more then a few times i have had to correct someone about dodges crummy fuel pump causeing so many issues. inreality it's cummins specd, and has cause almost as many issue's in the ag/construction market. up till about 3 years ago, a good friend of mine worked on case equipment . he replaced many a lift pump, and frequently injector pumps.

Our Cummins ISC8. 3L equipped "volunteer" fire engine has the same pump working with the CAPS injection pump. However it only runs for 30 seconds on each startup and the injection pump pulls its own fuel. This short run makes sure fuel is moving to the injection pump. Its also used to prime the system for filter changes. Prefilling is absolutely too risky on this injection pump according to the manual. The pump is mounted with some kind of bypass valve to allow fuel to go around the pump when its off. It works well in this situation because it runs very little and doesn't wear out.

But its clear on this setup everything goes thru it first. Most on here would never be satisfied with just this one pump for a 450HP Dodge. But Case IH is.

Yikes. I've always assumed that heavy equipment manufacturers were smarter than this (assuming it really is as problematic as we think).

Cummins probably told Case that those LP's will be fine, so they used them.

Usually the equipment gets the new stuff before the trucks do. Back in the mid 80's there were 4 and 6bt engines in heavy equipment. The 6. 7's were out in the Case loaders 2 years before they went into trucks.

Maybe the 24v pump doesn't share the problem with the 12v pump??? Or maybe it does and they are trying to use them all up??

True... but this pump isn't anything new and its history for reliable diesel delivery has to be well known. I still don't see how its delivering enough for 450HP and who knows how much torque under full load.

Usually the plastic insert for the impeller drive coupler would fail or the internal bypass might stick rendering the pump useless. In my experience they always ran... just nothing flowed out the outlet. :)

I do know that the pump on my combine is about twice the size of the one that used to be on my pickup and it sounds allot meaner as well when running. It will hold a steady 20 psi under full load and I mean FULL load. I have had injector problems and some boost problems, but the pump itself hasn't failed yet.
