After breaking my 5th potmetal AFC line, I decided I was no longer going to pay Cummins $25 (or Dodge $55) for a little piece of hose with a loop on one end, and a 1/4" OD air hose end cap (for lack of a better term) on the other. So, for under $5, I have come up with the following solution- I'll try to explain now in text, but will post pics as soon as I take them to clarify my gibberish.

You will need-

~6-10" 1/8" OD air line

2x 1/8" ferrules and compression nuts to complement them

1x adaptor- 1/8NPT on one end, 5/16" coarse thread for compression nut on the other.

1x 5/16" coarse thread double union for 1/8" OD hose



1. Remove the old/broken AFC hose

2. Remove the elbow coming out of the intake that the old AFC hose screwed into.

3. Take an adaptor (1/8" NPT on one end, 5/16 coarse on the other [also found in many oil pressure guage install kits]) and screw the 1/8NPT end into the intake. The adaptor may or may not have an elbow; choice is yours.

4. Take a 1/8" ferrule and compression nut and attach a piece of 1/8" OD air line to the adaptor from step 3.

5. On the AFC housing, screw in a double union of the same size for 1/8" OD air line. The union is, I believe, a 5/16, and the AFC housing is 8mm. Doing the math, based on 1"=25. 4mm, it comes out to a 0. 0625mm difference. If you feel uncomfortable with this, a double wrap of teflon tape on the end going into the AFC housing should take up any slack.

6. Attach the other end of the line, with ferrule and compression nut, to the union you just screwed into the AFC housing.



Now you have a functioning AFC again, have your full power back, and even if you go to NAPA, are $20 ahead of the game. If you are going for a show-n-shine, and want it to look stock, you will have to get the dealer (Cummins or Dodge) item. If you are just after performance, and saving money any way you can, without cutting corners, this is your ticket. I have tried this, and response/ power/ performance is just as fast as with the stock or replacement hose.

This idea had been floating around in my head (along with other things) for a while, with the question of how to do it with 1/4" hose; namely an adaptor to fit into the AFC housing to work with the threads in the housing. Then I saw the elbow was the same size as the fitting in the intake; 1/8" OD will work. The rest is history. Here is a pic of the finished product.

CB, There is a lot of air and not much fuel in my head most times, so we dont have to worry about me blowing anything up :eek: :-laf



And he is right, the updated hose from Cummins is rubber, but my fix is about 10% of what they want for theirs, and mine is repairable if anything breaks, which I'm sure I'll find out if it is possible.

And WTH is this about you selling your truck??? I'm starting to hear rumors...
 
Dont believe everything you hear, CB. I dont have the cash in hand, and the guy told me the other night he probably wouldnt be able to do because he cant seem to dump his pickup on someone. BTW, guys, he IS a TDR member, so it would be going to a home, where the bug will have bitten by the time he got home. :D

Tell you what, when the stoopid, twins, and dtt goes in, I'll give ye' a ride in my truck...



Then you can make your decision on what kind of truck to buy... :D



Now if I could just figure out what kind of twins to run, and what converter... hmm... altitude is a BUGGER! 4k feet makes my options narrow down a little.



Thinkin' about 89% and 35/ht3b twins... I would like to go tighter and a 40 on top, but the altitude just won't have it. :(
