New Cicada thread + AHB in Louisiana

Well guys after reading the cicada thread I realized we dont get what yall are talking about.



I mean lets get some La guys to chime in. I have seen some locust shells on some trees in my lifetime but not many. How come we dont get them here like yall get them there? They did make alot of noise seems like when I was little.



Now before yall try and explain that let me hit ya with another one. AHB, Africanized Honey Bees, Killer Bees, been coming for years like a hurricane, Been told about it it since we were kids, hit Texas what 20 years ago? Spread west into Arizona, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, got a couple of hives in Colorado



Reached Houston what 13 years ago? "WHAM" ran out of gas! WHY? Why arent there AHB in Loiusiana? "BAM" hit a wall they cant cross!



WHY? WHY? Before I tell yall, lets see what yalls explanation is

To understand cicadas, you have to live in Cincinnati. OH, soon to be cicada central



in about a week we will have like 8 billion of the noisy things hanging around and driving us crazy, Cincinnati has the largest "outbreak" of them every 17 years when brood X comes up to play, I remember the last time in 87 when the trees were literaly covered in the noisy things

Okay, but what about AHB? Why did the onslaught cave at the louisiana border?

I miss those bugs, we called them zeerees for the sound they made. Used to be nice to hear them at night until I moved to Colorado where no bugs,other than flies and mosquittos, live. Also miss those dang dive bombing June bugs.

It is too wet in Louisiana for cicada or locust or whatever you call them and the ones what do make it over there get eat by dem crawdads. The Louisiana mosquetoes done whup the AHB's ass.

I grew up in Louisiana and remember seeing the locust shells on the trees all over. I didn't know that they only came around every 17 years. When I was a kid, we used to play with them while they were still in the shells.



As far as the AHB, BG nailed it, dem skeeters are some bad dudes. Seriously, I have no idea.

I see you're in Atlanta. If you want to hear the 17 year locust, drive up to the north GA mountains this weekend. My folks, who live in Union County (Blairsville), report that the locust's started last weekend, and are now at full volume. I'm on 64 acres in a very rural part of Pickens county, and am surprised that we do not have any locusts. I lived in Blairsville 17, and 34 years ago, and can remember well the sound the locust's made. Apparently, Atlanta, and even Jasper is a little south of the locusts' range.

Only thing I found was that Lousiana gets too much rain distributed evenly throughout the year. Apparently there is some correlation between an annual rainfall of 55 inches or more and areas where the AHBs will not spread, but they can't figure out why. Am I close?

Noone knows for sure but it does seem to be rainfall and temp. The AHB did cross the rainforest so it is not rainfall alone. We get 60 inches of rain where I am from in La and we do get some freezes in the winter.



OTOH it may very well be Political
