I have a 1997 3500 5 speed trans. and just had a new cluch installed. All woked well until I started pulling my 5th wheel trailer. With or with the trailer the truck jumps when taking off. The flywheel was resurfaced when cluch was installed. Any ideas what's causing this and will it damage the new cluch. Help...

I had similar issues with my 5-speed but only when backing up the trailer. Old clutch didn't do it, new one didn't for a little while. New one started the reverse bucking and I just lived with it for about 40k.

When I swapped to the G56 I found one (of five) springs in the disc broken. Don't know if that was the problem but the 6-speed has never had any bucking so it wasn't axle wrap or other problems with the truck.

What clutch was put in it? Some of the friction materials they use get a bit aggressive. I've installed several Rhino clutches that have been as you describe.

I have the same issue with mine. New SB 13", 1 1/38 input, etc. Problem is no slippage with these units. I could slip my old one towing but not this one.

Try applying a litte throttle when taking off, like driving a gas rig. Either that or several third gear holeshots helped with my dual disc set up. :)

Thanks for the reply and info. So far nothing seems to work . Guess I'll have to go to a good transmission shop and have them tear it apart and find out whats wrong.

I was at Indy this weekend and talked to southbend face to face about my clutchs jumpyness or bucking. It never has been smooth and pulling a 35 ft 5er made some of the takeoffs suck. They said it takes at least a thousand miles to seat a clutch but a lot more to bed it in. It will get better with more miles. Theres nothing wrong with your clutch, its doing what you paid for, not slipping.

In my truck some of the bucking comes in because of how high the peddle is off the floor when the clutch engages. I think if it was closer to the floor it would be easier to feather the clutch for smooth starts. I'm going to try to make an adjustable clutch rod to fix since no one sells one

What year is your truck? Fill out your signature and it will help.

Nyoest... ... ... ... ... the info you got from southbend people seems to be correct. I talked to a mechanic that works on Dodge trucks and he said the same thing . Just got to live with it for a while. He also said there was no adjustment to be made. Thanks again to all who replyed.

The heavy duty hydraulics they sell has an adjustable rod at the m/c, but mine is still too far to the top with it shortened all the way. I used the supplied spacer under the pivot and think it would be about right without it. Lot of work just to find out though.

I don't believe there is an adjustable rod for the 94-97 years. Genosgarage starts at 98 and goes on up. But I have been known to be wrong, just ask my wife.
