--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all, I bought my first (new to me) diesel in April 2011. It's a 2007 Laramie CTD 6. 7L DRW. Low the truck!! Dedicated tow vehicle. So it sits a lot. I am thinking this is probably not a good thing to let it sit.

Problem: I am hearing a squeal (not a whistle) when I let off the accelerator while driving with the exhaust brake on. It is a sound that is intermittent. I could not reproduce the sound when I took the service advisor for a ride so he could check it out. The truck had 49K miles on it when I bought over a yr ago, now has 58Kmiles on it. The only thing I had done upon purchase was oil change and transmission service. Until now, all that had been done is oil/oil filter and air filter change. Service advisor suggested getting a full diesel clean out.

Any suggestions/advice to address this squeal?

Thanks,

Brooks

you should check the nuts that attach the egr cooler to the exhaust manifold. do it while cold. maybe just loose enuff that when warm goes away.

The dealer told me to do the diesel clean out. Where they "tap" the turbo. . clean it out and check all the nuts. I have searched this forum and unable to find anything on "diesel clean out".

Brooks

Most likely what you here is the whistle in the turbo when the exhaust brake activates. The early 6. 7's were very noticeable, my 08 was that way.

DRW has been in the shop since this AM. Turbo was full of SOOT, so it being cleaned out and new fuel filter. I will report when I get it home.

Thanks,

Brooks

What he said. Mine is the same way.

Possibly the whole EGR and turbo need cleaning.

I'd get rid of the parts that affect fuel economy and reliability then not have any worries.

CBLACK, that is one of the answers I was looking for!! So there is such a thing a clean out for these components? I have a concern with "ridding" the parts that affect the fuel economy and reliability as here in AZ we have yearly emmision testing. It would PIA to have to put all those parts back on each year. No time for that man, unless it does not affect emmisions test. Anyone out there in AZ that dealt with this?

I think for the dealer to clean the EGR it would be around $700. At least that's what my dealer told me.

Sucks that you have emissions testing.

My dealer told me $1400!!! Yikes. . So when people post that have never had any probs with their trucks, I wonder if they ever follow the manual and do the "recommended" service. The manual "recommends" to have these cleanouts, if not done, could void warranty.

UPDATE: We took a trip to Mogollon rim this past weekend and squeal is back!!! Even after having the turbo cleaned out. The power was noticeable (good), but that squeal when I left off the skinny pedal is bugging me. It is not a "whistle" (please read guys). It is a "high pitched squeal". I was thinking about it the whole trip. A friend I was camping with asked me if it had a "waste gate". I do not know what that is.

One thing I did not have on when the service advisor and I took the a drive to see if I could reproduce that "squeal" while driving it was the tow/haul mode. I always drive with exhaust brake on but not the tow/haul mode. Maybe that will help produce that sound and we can get a diagnosis.

2nd Update: Just had a second opinion from a diesel shop. We are going take the belt off and inspect each pulley, to see if any are loose, worn, etc. . See if that fixes the problem. If any pulleys are loose, it could be what's causing maybe the belt to spin too fast during decel. . I really do not want to give up on this truck. It's a beast!!

Did you check the nuts that attach the EGR cooler to the manifold? I know that the Dealer said they checked them But the noise you are explaining sound like the nuts are loose. The noise that is heard when there is a leak at the EGR cooler sounds like a squeeling/ high pitched whistle noise.

I dropped truck off at shop this AM, they called me this afternoon to let me know that one of the pulleys was going to need to be sanded down. The belt on the inside was slightly worn. Will know more in AM. I also, suggested what you guys suggested. He didn't think it was where the squeal was coming from that he was going to check anyway.

I'd like to see a reference for the owner's manual page or a cut and paste of the text where the owner's manual recommends owners allow themselves to be ripped off by a dealer service department for a bogus $1400 turbo cleaning service.

Would you please provide that for us uninformed?

I think the guy got himself caught in a lil lie. The last time I spoke with him at the stealership, I asked again about the EGR cleaning and said I would do it myself (no way I would $1400 to have it done), he said "oh no, it's more like $850" and confirmed it was just a few gaskets but if not careful to get a good seal you end up with a huge air bubble and could warp head/block. That confirmed he's FOS. I ended up takin it to shop recommended by a friend to figure this "squeal out" read above. As for a copy, I did not think to ask what page it the prices were on. I know on one of my past ford rangers it did show the recommended service costs. It must have been on the '96. I can't imagine any make showing prices these days as they make $$ on these services.

Your response had no connection to my question.

In your earlier post you, not the dealer service writer, wrote that the service was required in the Dodge service manual.

For the record - No such service is mentioned in any owner's manual I have seen.
