I called cummins today to get a new lift pump and was informed of a new part # 4932707. There are none in stock. A few calls later I found out it is a kit with a bypass and new elect. connector so if the pump fails and creates a low pressure situation the ecm knows and opens a bypass so vane on the injection pump can bypass the impellar on the lift pump through an internal valve and a warning light will appear on the dash. That according to a rep at the cummins customer service phone #.

The part # I was using before is 3990105 for my 98. 5 24v w/ no mods. I diagnosed the lift pump after using a mech. gauge to check my elec. fuel pressure gauge and and amp meter to verify the pump was running a drawing current and verified voltage present at the terminals. Been getting erratic fuel pressures for a few weeks but finally starting hitting less than 5 psi cruising.

Just called the *******/dealer, thay state they do not sell the lift pump anymore, but a conversion to an "In-The-Tank" pump.

Called my friendly cummins dealer $160 and in stock, cya fellas !

Interesting ... anyone got more info. on this?

That sounds like way too much new functionality for just a new lift pump. Doing this would require new ECM programming, fuel pressure sensors, etc.

I've never seen the SLIGHTEST hint of any electronically controlled "bypass", or"pump vane control" inside either a stock lift pump OR the VP-44 - I seriously suspect this is the pipe dream of some local parts pusher, unless the new in-tank replacement pumps are FAR more sophisticated than what we've seen so far...

Here we go again, a member reports what he was told and, of course, you have to weigh in and add no information, just your endless opinion.

If you dont have any information to add just wait and see where it goes.

Perhaps he is right, perhaps he was lied to. No one wants to hear your opinion on EVERYTHING.

Since you didnt take time to read the original post, this is not the OEM LP or the intank LP but something new he was told about. He is just trying to relate what he was told.

It wont take long for those in the know to indicate if this is true or false.

I would bet that this kit is for the non-Dodge ISB applications like school busses. There was some talk a while back about a new set-up for them.

Don't mind Gary, he comes around here and raises hate and discontent and then quits for a while, this last time didn't last long though, he came back pretty quick.

You got me thinking so I went on quick serve and checked my parts list and it now lists the stock lift pump as part number 3946151 and it looks just like the 3990105 pump?????

Quickserve

and we'll see if the parts page comes up

Lift Pump

On Edit: Looks like you guys will have to sign up to see it, but it does show a new number lift pump just not the number listed in the start of this thread.

I got this part # from cummins power south in Gainesville, GA. I got the description from calling the 800 # on Cummins web page and getting customer service dept. I'm still planning on using the old part # because I don't want more electronic controls than I already have. I just wanted to pass the info along (deep sigh of exasperation) but flame away all you want.

Thanks to all you you pass along pertinant information. Sympathy to those who just need an outlet for your tempers.

I've been an Amateur Radio Operator for 27 years and have seen many people like that before, they just talk-talk-talk-talk-talk-talk-talk. The keep the repeaters tied up so that no one can use them. They know more than anyone else and ALWAYS have an OPINION to share. 99. 9% of the time no one else wants or asks to hear it.

For fun, go to Gary's profile and click on "find more posts", grab some beer and popcorn and read for HOURS, it is like a reality show with no plot.

BDudley, thanks for posting what you heard, we need more like you and less like the other.

Oh I see.

So all that anguish all that garbage on the other farewell post for gary was for nothing?

Typical rubbish again. Well at leist I now call Texas Diesel my friend. Thanks

I hope his supporters learned something this time?

Texas Diesel you miss-quoted me, I said, "Don't mind Gary" and you changed it to "I don't mind Gary" looks like someone is doing a little creative writing! I have the same issues with him you do, I was just telling the thread starter to ignore him and you changed it to make it look like something else. I was going to think like todt061458 and call you my friend, but it's pretty bad when you alter someones quote.

Well Turbo Tim1, I'm at a loss here. All I did was hit "quote" and then type below the "quote" marks

Perhaps my big fingers missed a button or two :(

My apologies, no intent to mis-quote you!! I have no explaination for the insertion of "I" in the text.

Mystery solved, after bouncing back between page 1 & 2 twenty-five times.

The "I" came from the first word in paragraph 1, I quoted you but deleted the paragraphs before and after paragraph 2. SO it seems I started the delete after your first "I". The "Dont mind Gary" starts with a capitol "D" so you can see how just started highlighting after the first "I" in paragraph 1.

Hope this lets you see how I made the mistake and hopefully, you see it was an honest mistake.
