Is this a new 6 speed auto?

Alan in AZ

No, this is the new 6-spd manual that replaces the NV5600...

It is called the G56, made by CVD (DiamlerChrysler commercial vehicle division)

Tomey you know more than me... but I thought you are never charged for the manual transmission as it;s always considered 'standard' equipment (no pun intended) and the autos are optional usually running an extra $700-1,000 on the stickers??? It's been like this on every car I;ve bought.

This was true in 2003, when the NV4500 was standard, and the NV5600 was a $400 option...

But then the NV4500 was dropped and the $400 charge for the NV5600 stayed, kinda shaddy, but none the less, there was a charge for that manual

Keep in mind the early 2005 HD's standard transmission is the cheap 5-spd put behind the HEMI, so they DID have a no-charge manual, it was just not available with the diesel

The $400 charge for the NV5600 is because it was not the base transmission for the truck. Rember, you can order the HD trucks with a gasser too.

There's no more charge because the G56 is also the standard trans with the Hemi in the 2500/3500. I imagine Dodge will eventually follow Ford's lead and also offer one HD automatic (the TorqShift is now the only automatic on ther SDs, gas or diesel).

g56

Tomey, thanks for the info. I'm waiting for the 2006 because I heard it might be a full crew cab, I think called the maxi-cab. I had also heard the getrag was coming back, had that in my 1st gen and never had a problem(almost 300k) when sold it. Do you know of these 2 rumors? and how much do you know about the g56? Thanks Bill, maybe won't have to wait for the 2006 if you give me reason not to.

Getrag: I believe people mistaked the G56 for a getrag, so I do not think we will get a getrag anytime soon in the ram diesel

The megacab is a reality, but the timeline is still a bit blurry

that mercedes g56 is only logical, dont like the al case. I noticed the front half of the case is also the bellhousing, kinda bad if you chunk a clutch at least with the 5600 you could replace belhousing and have a trans ready to go as long as you do the input shaft... ... . btw what is the size of the input shaft? I put 5 bucks on the fact its an 1. 25... . that would be a big loss to go down in input shaft size.....

Any word on what the shift pattern is? When I got my NV5600 in the 99, I hated the pattern and though reverse was in a hard place. But now, 65,000 miles later, I'm used to it.

everyone makes good points, just remember one thing. Anything Mercedes

Benz makes light duty is still 10x better than any american heavy duty. I had the pleasure of owning a Benz there is no comparison. Anyway we'll find out soon enough how good or bad they are, we have no choice unless you drive your current truck forever. HAPPY HOLIDAY to everyone.

b. ferrara... . not in today's world... they have cheeeeepened them a bunch for the all mighty $$$$$, I won't buy another one. . my wife's ML is junk parts and assembly IMHO

BTW back in the 84 300SD I went through 8 HVAC compressors call that hd [in 250K before I gave it to my sister]... . Eh

Brandon. . it's no difference than an Automatic as to the bell housing :(

Well, driving the current truck "forever" is the plan :-laf

I will take the proven record of the NV 5600 any day over the Mercedes. Don't know much about the G56, but I know that if the NV 5600 holds up behind the Banks Sidewinder, then it will hold up to anything I do. That is why I got my 05 before the switch.
