The fire dept. i work for just recently took possesion of a Pierce Pumper. It has a 515hp Detroit in it. When we were out there inspecting it I noticed that the turbo would spool up at idle and would be very loud. One of the guys at the plant said that this was from air from the air system being injected in to the exhaust side of the turbo to displace some of the emmisions and essentialy fooling the emmision laws.

Is this true, or something else?

Sounds just like what Craig (csevers) was reporting about back when he used to work on fleet vehicles...

I bet it's just the VNT/VGT (variable nozzle/geometry turbo)... they spool REALLY quick even without a load on the engine. (My VW TDI could make 20psi sitting in neutral and that had a VNT on it... )

On most vehicles I have seen/worked on: When the engine first fires off... the VNT/VGT blades are directing the exhaust away from the turbine wheel... . once the engine is running for a bit - the VNT/VGT blades make the exhaust flow directly at the turbine wheel for maximum boost/quickest spool... .

EGR systems don't make noise like that... at least not that I know of...

Matt-

That's what I originally thought too after looking through the manual, but then one of their guys mentioned that; just sounded odd. Just seems like it wouldn't do much for emissions since everything is measured in PPM.

The Detroits I have seen had VGT with an back pressure valve like the 7. 3 did to aid in warm up. If it is sitting around the corner you would sure guess that it had a MAJOR air leak lots of hissing and grown from the back pressure they also idle up till warm also.

Got that right. The first time I heard one with the valve shut, it wasn't to far from the semi. I thought I blew an air line, 'til I remembered about that. Plus I noticed all the white smoke from the Ford.

I stand partially corrected... thanks Craig.

I understand that it's loud enough that you won't be making any friends at the truck stop with drivers trying to sleep...

KIseminger, congrats to your dept. on the purchase of the finest apparatus available :) ran on our sabre engine and our dash rescue tonight :)

Yeah, we're really happy with the rig. It showed up at the station today. As you can see it's BIG. It's a Dash on a 4x4 chassis. We had really bad luck with a couple previous engines that we just got rid of so we decided to stick with what we've had good success with- Pierce.

The Plant was amazing, they have 200-250 trucks being worked on at any given time. Let's do the math, shall we?

Average cost of 1 peice of apparatus- 400k (just a guess) x 200= $8 million:eek:

I have many connections in my old hometown's Fire Dept. - hrmmmmm... . :D

They don't own any Pierce equipment, though... Mostly E1, American LaFrance, LTI... .

Matt

My chief is a former Pierce dealer road service tech turned Pierce Apparatus salesman and my captain is a Pierce road service tech. Chief engineer was a Pierce Parts man, Deputy Chief USED to be a pierce parts man. Needless to say, it's all we have now :) Chief just got back wednesday from driving a truck back from Appleton.
