I just read where the (ASTM) American Society of Testing and Materials approved performance tests and limits that will be used by the (API) American Petroleum Institute to license PC-9 Diesel Oils. The approval updates ASTM Standard D4485, which covers gasolene and Diesel Oils.

New Heavy Duty Diesel oils are expected to be licensed as API CI-4 oils beginning September 5, 2002.

That’s good since they are backward compatible with CH-4 oils but have greater soot holding capacity. But Chevron has announce that Delo 400 15W-40 (mineral oil) already meets the CI-4 specs without reformulation. The major synthetics might have to be reformulated since it is more of a challenge to increase the level of dispersants in a PAO based oil vs Group II or III mineral oils.

With the next spec oil, I am hearing that it will have more soot holding capacity, since the upcoming engines are going to have to spit out less soot.



From discussions about extended oil changes, it seems to me that soot buildup is not a major issue for 1st and 2nd generation trucks. Yes, soot will build up over time, but not to a critical level on a good running truck.



Thus, is there any advantage to the newer oil specs for us current owners ??? Comments or corrections welcomed ...

Not quite sbiel - the new oil is formulated for the EGR equipped engines and they are going to produce FAAAAAAAR more soot in the oil than currently because they're EGR system will be putting far more soot back through the engine and therefore into the oil - that's why the new oil has to suspend more soot. Starting in Jan 1, 04 Nox levels are reduced - but soot levels are going to be increased.

but my question is, is the 'new' oil spec any better for current owners ??? I guess that increased soot holding is a plus, but I wonder if we really need more ??? (yes for future trucks !!)

I believe the new oil will be better for our current trucks. There was some discussion in the latest TDR mag. about the new oil.

They said you might be able to extend your oil drain intervals because of better soot handling.

Serious question, no bashing intended. Can you find out how Amsoil intends to determine/prove that it's oil(s) will meet the new CI-4 requirement? I was looking at some old Amsoil literature I received somewhere (CA4WDC convention I think) and the only tests referred to were the infamous 4 ball wear test and the chemical properties showing a significantly higher level of phosphorous and something else that I can't remember.

The Amsoil Diesel oils will go through all the same testing that any other Diesel (API CI-4) oil has to go through. The 4-ball (ASTM D4172)is not the only testing that will be done.
