Having driven an Aisiin in my 3500 I wonder if the new 8 speed would be a better choice. Follow my logic.

For those who have an Aisin and paid the extra 2500 we probably didn't get a transmission that adjusts its program to the driving style, at least other have felt the same. It cant be programmed so you are limited if you want to void your warranty to get the truck to driive the way is should have out of the factory with no lag. 9Yes its real for all you doubters and an experienced Dodge tech already admitted it is built into the programming yet non Aisin transmission owners dont seem to experience it like Aisin owners).

Then comes rebuild time. Your already saved 2500 by not getting the aisin then you build the darn transmission like is should have in the first place when or if it fails

So if getting the newest 3500 do you go with the 8 speed. I bet it even drives better as diesels have such a narrow rpm to deal with. The extra 2 gears are probably real nice.

Wishful thinking I guess I was on the site building a new truck. Didn’t notice a 3500 gas opinion and assumed it was diesel. Oops. Then again I would like a 10 speed diesel

There was speculation that Ram would use the ZF PowerLine medium-duty 8-speed behind the revised Cummins. They did test it - there's a YouTube video of it. The rated torque limit of the PowerLine is currently 1400 Nm (1035 lb-ft), so Ram may have asked ZF for some additional "margin for error". But with Ford and Chevy/GMC both releasing 10-speeds this year, Ram would still be behind the times with an 8 speed. We can only hope a ZF, Aisin, or Mopar 10-speed is coming for the 2022 redesign (when the HD trucks get the new 1500's cab and bed design).

I’ve said it before.....and I’ll say it again.

Given the amount of belly aching, *******, moaning, groaning, griping, complaining, etc. that some have expressed with shifting of the 68RFE and the AS69RC, it will only get worse with the introduction of an 8 speed automatic or a 10 speed automatic.

I had the 8HP70 Behind My Ecodiesel, it did good. IMO you will see 8-Spd 2021+ 2500 when it replaces the 68RFE

Eco went bye bye?
I drive a 5.7/8HP almost daily, I really like it. Very predictable and seamless. If they could build one to reliably hold the tq of the Cummins I'd be all for one.
The rotary knob takes a little getting used to. It is otherwise nearly identical interior to my truck, occasionally I find myself reaching for the column shift in it and for the rotary when I'm in mine o_O

JR Yep. It was 3.0 the rest of the truck was stellar, the Trans never caused any worry, the VM 3.0 IMO will Kill FCA Dsl 1/2 Ton market.

I'm betting on a new trans offering behind the 3500HD for 2020 model year which purportedly can be ordered in Sept for November delivery. Was set to buy a 2019 on a lot but wasn't built the way I liked and I'm hearing some chatter on a few second year updates so we'll see!

They do well whilst using the paddle shifters in Ol’ Yeller. :D

I love driving my wife's 2019 1500 nice combo the 5.7L Hemi and the HP8 transmission.

Honestly, there are only two negatives on my 2017 Ram 5500: derated engine AND could use one more overdrive that an 8sp transmission could provide. I added a performance module dialed in to provide same power as P/Us and just don't care about running solo at 75MPH/~2475 RPM. Remember, my C&C reaches Max HP at 2400 RPM.

I knew the performance and GVWR/GCWR of my truck when I bought it and am good. Of all the trucks I've purchased, two were at the end of model versions, where I weighed capability, cost, and my requirements. The deal won out.

I'm big on the deal. Homework is key. I watched my 2017 Ram 5500 on the Internet for 3 months and knowing it was on the lot approximately a year. Buying a 2017 three quarters into the 2018 MY knowing engine and transmission updates on MY 2019 ALL worked into leveraging the deal.

BOTTOM LINE: I like the Aisin 6spd transmission and would likely buy it over an 8 or 10 spd IF the DEAL was awesome. Just me.

Cheers, Ron
