Cummins Introduce's Euro 4 Engines

April 6, 2005, Cummins has shown its Euro 4 ISBe engines for the first time at the Commercial Vehicle Show, Birmingham, England. For Euro 4, these engines have been improved in key areas, according to Cummins, benefiting coach and bus operators with higher performance and lower operating costs. The new block design has increased displacement from 3. 9 to 4. 5 liters (four-cylinder) and 5. 9 to 6. 7 liters (six-cylinder). Growing displacement allows the four-cylinder ISBe to move to 185ps and 700 Nm peak torque. The six-cylinder ISBe moves up to 300ps and 1100Nm. Oo. This reflects a 17% increase in torque versus Euro 3, said Cummins. :D

Wonder how long before this makes it to the US?

Cheers,

Additional info...

On the opening day of the Birmingham CV Show Cummins has launched its solution for Euro 4 from 185 to 300hp. The manufacturer says that several OEMs have shown interest in this new light truck power option.

The ISBe 4 and 6 are developments of Cummins' B-series engine and the manufacturer says that an increase in swept volumes, a new 1600 bar common rail injection system and engine control module have increased power and torque outputs significantly.

The 4-cylinder ISBe 4 has gone from 3. 9 to 4. 5-litres resulting in a maximum power output of 185hp and 700Nm of torque and the ISBe 6 has grown from 5. 9 to 6. 7-litres taking it to 300hp and 1100Nm.

The company says that the enhancements to the engines have boosted fuel returns by up to 7% in testing over the Euro 3 version of its B-series engine. Cummins has said that its strategy for Euro 4 will be based around SCR although the company is employing EGR to meet emmissions standards in the USA.

The future of Cummins' popular 10. 8-litre ISMe used by Foden and ERF is in doubt at Euro 4. The manufacturer refuses to comment on the engine's future at Euro 4 only confirming that the engine could be capable of meeting the forthcoming emmissions standards. Cummins says it will supply and support the Euro 3 version of the ISMe for the next 18 months.

In an interesting twist, MAN ERF has announced that it is offering its new Euro 4 10. 5-litre D20 engine in the ERF ECT to compliment the existing ISMe and D28 power options. MAN ERF says that it will offer a Cummins engine in the ERF ECT at Euro 4 if Cummins can supply one, but if not it is confident that its D20 will fit the bill. Currently 85% of ERFs are sold with the Cummins ISMe power option. Foden will adopt SCR at Euro 4 and is likely to use the new Daf 13-litre MX engine, increasing further the doubts over the ISMe.

I wonder if that 6. 7 has a future with the TDR crowd ;)

somehow i don't think so, at least not before 07/08 when tier 3 hits the truck/offroad engine market... after when tier 3 hits, maybe... and the 6. 7 isbe does the tier 3 with no egr system...

I don't know about that Rusty. If I wanted the ISC and couldn't get it I'd rather have an ISL. Course, I'd want the ISL above the ISC lol, no reason to go any smaller :D
