I bought some fuel filters at Cummins NW in Portland a few months ago and just opened one up. The plastic is black, not brown like the old ones. The element is also smaller. The counter guy gave me some small o-rings because he said that some were packaged without them, and he was right. The problem is that there is not a large o-ring for the top either. Am I supposed to reuse the old o-ring? The guy at the counter said he reads the TDR forum so hopefully he or one of you can educate me on this. Thanks

I got some from Geno's about 6 months back.

Same thing, smaller,O-rings omitted from the kit. It's probibally a cost cutting measure.

Mine came with a letter explaning the change, and I think it said something to the effect that if you asked for the gaskets, they'd (cummins?) supply them.

I never really read the whole page. I didnt do my filter since I got the newer version.

Sorry I aint more of a help. :(

The outer o-ring is already installed on the new filter.

When the new style first came out, they said you didn't need to use any o-rings because they were all pre-installed. Now they give you the little o-ring for the center post because the pre-installed center o-ring doesn't do it's job. Mine didn't. I put my small o-ring back on the middle and it stopped the leak.

Nope

I'm not talking about the small center o-ring. The large o-ring that goes on the top of the filter wasn't included.

He did.

The large one (or-ring) should come pre-installed on the filter element. If it wasn't, return the filter. I would not suggest re-using the old one.

The problem with the (original) new filter and lack of small o-ring was that Cummins figured out the small o-ring rarely goes bad. Problem was that people still removed it when installing the new filter element. You were meant to leave the old one in place and simply install the new filter.

I just installed one last nite. All that it was missing where the small o-rings. Also I noticed that the filter element was made of a newer material as well.

I feel dumb

After getting the replys I opened the other 5 filters I had. They all had the large o-ring installed, so by chance I had opened the only one without an o-ring. It's too far to Portland to return a filter so I tried it with the old o-ring and there isn't a leak so I guess I lucked out. :) Thanks to everyone that replied.
