I searched the forum for a recent thread but need to start a new one. My 2017 Ram 3500 needs fuel filters replaced. Went to the local (Willis, Tx) auto parts stores - O'Rielly, Advance, Autozone & Jordy's. Some had none for 6.7. Found Wix and store brand @ O'Rielly. Got Wix Premium Filter WF10112. Looks like water separation filter only. Searched on this forum. Should both engine mounted and frame mounted be replaced at same time? Where is the 3 micron spec found? And for which filter? I do not see mention of that spec in the diesel supplement 5th edition. From what I'm reading, I should take the Wix back and order online. Can someone shed some illumination on this mess. And the price at O'Rielly for the Wix was $117.99 for only the water separator!! Must be some PREMIUM FILTER!!

Let me try to ask the question another way. I found the source of the 3 micron rating requirement. It is on page 78 of the 5th diesel supplement - 2017-RAM-15_25_35_45_55-Diesel-SU-5th.pdf. Which filter is the 3 micron spec for? The water separator? The engine mounted post paper/plastic filter? Are both filters required to be replaced at the same time? I see them sold as individual pieces everywhere - Geno's Garage, Amzn, EBay, Dieselfiltersonline, Nationalfleetparts, and clearly the local auto stores. And thanks for the great advice Cummins12V98. I will try to do that in the future.

The 3 micron filter is the engine mounted unit. As far as I know the only legitimate sources are Mopar and Fleetguard. The water sep is also a primary filter. It's only legit sources are Mopar, Baldwin, and Racor, who makes it for Mopar. They should be changed together although some stretch the engine mounted unit. Doesn't seem worth it to me.
