I also had the "how hot is too hot" question. So I called a Cummins dealer and was told that Cummins rates the 2004. 5 at 1000* at peak horespower with the probe being "within 6 inches of the turbo on the exhaust side". Quote unquote. When I asked about the prob in the manifold the answer was that Cummins does not measure EGT's at the manifold. Rather strange I thought. But I have heard from other sources 1450 is tops in the manifold. Take it for what it is worth.

For stock trucks, the whole pre post argument would be alot stronger for the pre guys if Cummins did not say to put it post, as Cummins bases thier measurements on it in thier testing. But they only build the engine what do they know?
