Just put in a fuel pressure gauge and now it won't start.

Let me rephrase that - it started, ran for a few seconds then died and won't fire up.

fuel pressure line hooked up to top of filter housing

lift pump runs for the 20 seconds after trying to start

tried to bleed air out by cracking other plug on top of filter, no fuel ever came out

what do I do? keep on cranking?

I never have any problems when I change my fuel filter? Whats up? I need to drive to work tomorrow...

Sounds like you got some air in the line try this 3 times, crank the starter for just a second this will give a signal for the lift pump to run for some 30 seconds, you will hear it pumping then when the pump quits shut the key off and repeat. This will purge the air out and take it back to the tank, then the truck should start. One thing its best to fool with the fuel system only when your tank is full or near full, this gives the poor fuel pump a chance at not having to pull such a vacumn.

Cheers, Kevin

did it four times still no fire.

truck is on slanted driveway with 3/4 tank. Engine on high side. Should I roll it into the street?

You might have to crack the fitting loose on the injection pump (banjo bolt) then twitch the key and when fuel is squirting out tighten it back up, this will get the air out. But this brings up a question, are you seeing any pressure on your gauge? Is it possible your LP is not pumping? Even with air in the system I see pressure of some sort on my gauge.

the lift pump is making noise...

I am not seeing any pressure on the gauge at all.

I cracked the other plug on top of the filter and tapped the key a few times and never got any fuel.

It has happened before where the motor of the lift pump runs but the pump doesn't turn. There is a plastic coupling that breaks. I really have to guess she's smoked. Had you checked the pressure prior to starting this project?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that your lift pump is definantely dead. Hopefully it hasn't been that way for too long. Good Luck. BTW the Cummins part number for the lift pump is 3990105 but you will need the kit with the wiring pigtail for your truck and I don't have that number.

Yes they will replace it under warranty, sorry I didn't even think of that. You could take the cover off of the fuel filter and top it off (use to do that with a portable Ingersol compressor at work to get it running) it may run then but personally I wouldn't want to take the chance of ruining the VP.

I thought it would start with a bad lift pump. Easier when cold and hard to start after short trips. Only have to drive 3 miles to the dealer...

Guess my truck might see the back of a wrecker tomorrow unless it happens to start - THAT SUCKS!!!

When I changed my fuel filter awhile back I failed to get the housing to fill as well. Figured that the lp was dying. Following a tip from someone else here, I used a rag and a air hose and pressurized the fuel tank to push fuel to the bowl with the bleeder screw loose. It worked to get me back up to go get a new lp and a pusher.

Has a good point, if you pressurize the tank it doesn't take much.

I ran a hot wire to the lp and then pressurized the tank, that way I made sure my lp was being pressurized. If you pressurize the tank and the truck runs but you have no fuel pressure, you have a bad lp. If you get the gauge to read pressure but the truck won't run, well... ... ...

My lp before was about 11psi at idle, negative something at wot. The lp just did not have enough suction to pull from the tank.

So in conclusion I would say you have a sucky suction problem, or a lift pump that sucks,,, just not fuel.

By the way, one time after changing fuel filter I forgot to hook up pigtail to lp, this after pressurizing the tank, so I started truck truck ran fine, but no pressure, so I goosed the pedal a little, still nothing, hmmmmm. So these things will run without a lp as long as they don't lose prime, but the vp44 is not getting the fuel it needs for lubrication and cooling.

LOL

Tx-TowRig.

Where in Tx are you?

Sounds like you have a dead lift pump. Unless your warrenty is void for some reason, the dealer should pick up the bill on the lift pump.

I'm in Houston, it's at the dealer now.

They called and said the LP was dead and they will replace it. They are also going to replace the vacuum pump because I complained that it was leaking oil. Should be running soon.

Thanks everyone,

Scott

OK,

picked up the truck this afternoon with the new LP, drove it home and parked it.

hooked fuel gauge back up (removed plug on top of filter and connected hose fitting)

primed it by tapping ignition, it turned over, no start. (did this multiple times)

took hose back off and re-installed plug, still no start.

checked for pressure at filter - GOOD!!! it shot to the hood - at least that works now

cracked banjo bolt at VP - got fuel there also

cracked injectors while cranking, dribble of fuel

Is my VP dead now??? I am having terrible luck with this thing right now

Any Help - is it the VP???
