I recently had new gears installed in the truck. I was running 3. 54 and upgraded to 4. 10's mainly for the towing aspect. Anyway, now my speedometer is off by about 10mph. I figured when the speedometer is reading 60mph the truck is actually doing 50mph. How can I get this fixed? Do I need to take it to the dealership? Someone guy told me that I have to make some adjustment to the transmission? I don't know where to go from here.

Thanks,

Chris

You need a new speedo drive gear. See your Dodge dealer or a transmission shop. You just have to pull the sensor out of the transmission and swap it.

I can't remember for certain, but I think the one for the 4. 10 is red and the 3. 54 is yellow. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Man, it's tough getting old... ... .

You are correct sir. I was thinking 2WD.

Now that I've slept on it, the red one is actually closer to pink and there's a green one, too.

You need a gear with 17% more teeth if your speedo is reading high (60 when you are at 50). Remember when you get to the bigger gears starting with black, I believe, you have to change the sleeve or you'll break the gears.

Would anyone with 4. 10 gears be able to find out the part number for me I need? I called my local dealership and the lady I talked to in the parts department said with my vin # it only shows the part for my 3. 54 gears which originally came in the truck. She said she can't find a part # for a truck with 4. 10's without a vin # for there truck. So I'm kinda stuck cause I don't want to pay $120 for a wrong part.

Mind is a 5 speed but I believe the auto is the same way. When you change the gear the adapter that goes in the trans has numbers like 25-31 and so on. You have to count the teeth on the sensor gear and turn the adaptor to 6' oclock with those numbers at 6 or the sensor will not pick up the signal and you will have no speedo at all. Been there done that took a while to figure it out. Luckly I had a service manuel. There is 4 notches in the adaptor where the bracket holds it on the trans Just turn it where you need it and bolt it up. My gears are 3. 54 and the gear was green.

Just curious, but where exactly is this speedo drive gear located on my transmission? Is it towards the back right before where the rear drive shaft connects to the transmission? I called Performance Transmissions and Parts and the guy asked me how many teeth my current drive gear had. I have no clue as to what I'm looking for.

It is not in the trans it is in the transfer case right in front of the output yoke you will see the wires in the transfer case unplug and remove 1 bolt and remove the minigen with the gear on the end be careful it just slides off.
