Soooo,

I've got the opportunity I've been waiting for... my buddy has agreed to let me have my old truck back (sold it to him back around '98)... It's a 91' 4x4 regular cab, auto, bone-stock except for the fueling retro that was covered under warranty, 145k, not been abused, etc. The only sad part is I'm gonna let my '02 mildly-bombed rig go... but I figure we're both getting a good deal. he's getting a hell of a truck and I'm getting a good bombing opportunity and CA$H!

My question is... What do I need to be looking for and/or what needs to be upgraded or replaced with a strong eye toward reliability. I'm not going to use it for daily driver and will only tow occasionally. Gen 2's I know pretty well, but don't know what breaks on Gen 1's...

Thx!

Nothin! :D

If he didn't beat it bad, there shouldn't be too much wrong with it. Maybe check the frame behind the steering gearbox, they are known to crack on the 4x4's. Did you or he ever do the KDP, or the bolts in there? I would make that a priority. Have fun with your new old toy! ;)

Flexplate: 2nd gen is upgraded from 1st gen and can be used in our app for better durability.

Torque Converter: Personal preference, I would not drive another auto without a tighter TQ.

transmission cooler: Nothing like hot transmission fluid to trash a transmission. The stock cooler seemed to be a little bit of a joke to me. I would go with a good, big, underbed aftermarket cooler with switched electric fan. (Is the fact that it has been over 100 for a while now influencing me here? :-laf )
