New generator, Hooray!!! What? It's too big?? DOH!!

Ok guys, I need an idea here. After much back and forth :-{} , I finally decided to sell the Honda EU2000, and bought a Honda EU3000. I figured that I could now run the roof AC, have an electric start, and only have one generator to service. The only draw back I found AFTER I made the purchase is that the new 3000 does not fit under my bed cover :{ The cool thing about the 2000 was that it fit under my solid fold up cover, and I could lock it closed and feel fairly secure with it back there when the fiver was not hooked up. The 3000 is about 2" too tall for the cover to close (it sits in the front by the bed). There is a set of feet on the bottom that I considered removing, but that would make the generator sit flat on the rubber bed mat. I don't want to create a cooling problem. So, I need an idea. What have you guys came up with with your generators?? All ideas are welcome... ... ... ... ..... Sarge

I had a local welder/fabricator weld up a sturdy steel frame and mounted my noisy Generac at the rear street-side corner of my 5er. At the end of a day of travel it only takes a minute to remove the snap on vinyl cover from the generator, open the power cord door and route the 120 vac power cord to the generator, and push the start button. The trailer is so well insulated I can barely hear it run when inside. Now I can run the 15,000 Btu ac unit, microwave, etc. It's not as neat as a built-in Onan or as quiet as a Honda but it was very affordable and it meets my needs.

You know, I did that on a travel trailer I had, and the only problem was that since the platform was welded to the frame of the trailer, the vibration of the generator was felt throughout the rig. I'm just a little skittish about putting it on the trailer frame again... .

Then make up a design that would incorperate a couple of motor mounts, or tanny mounts between your trailers frame and your gens frame... Just an idea ... If you really wanted to get slick use hitch pins to mount it and this way if it still got to loud then you would be able to quickly remove it.





Now lets get even slicker, since the gen would sit a little high up (making you have to use some effort to remove and attach), make a basket that would have square stake type pockets on each corner. Then have some rubber wheels w/casters mounted to some tubing that would insert into those pockets.



If the gen got to loud, you would slide in the basket legs / pin them / unpin the basket from the trailer and just wheel it as far away as you would like :-laf (like a HD table with wheels)... . WARNING make sure you aren't in a big hill or your gen will continue to get quieter and quieter during the night until you can't here it any more. . :{

I too went the same route by putting mine on a rear mounted hitch haul.



Very little vibration felt through the frame. So quiet back there that I can't even hear it with a fantastic fan running!



Cut out portion on the end is for the heat and exhaust to get out.

You could also make a receiver mount for the back of your truck.

That is a clean looking set up on the back of the RV, but I am actually considering a motorcycle carrier installed in a 2" hitch. Just trying to get up the nerve to hang my Harley back there... ... ... .

Had my first cousin the mine welder fab up a rack on the back the 5er, this guy didn't want it to fall off. 3 inch angle iron, and expanded metal floor. That trailer could go off a mountain and the gen would still be mounted to the rack and the frame. Course had to buy a bigger truck to pull it with. Know anybody wants to swap a 3k and alittle cash for a 4,500. Warden said it's the quietest one he's ever heard. I use to carry it in the back of the truck, got a transfer tank there now, won't fit no more.

Saw one a couple yrs back, couldn't believe it. It was on the rear of an Alpenlite. It wasn't a Sportster either ... a big boy. :--)
