Butch from Dishman Dodge sent me this email:

"I have had alot of people ask me about Dodge going to a 6spd Getrag trany, the only truck that will offer this trany is our Dakota, We have no info or factory rep that says it is going in the 2500 or 3500 trucks. "

Now we know that DC keep alot of things secret, but at this point it appears that the dealers don't know about any new trannys for the full size Rams.

Hey Tomeygun, have you heard anything about this?

Trust me, I have searched and searched and have found nothing, My dealer REP claims she knows nothing about it... . It is scary that if it is true, that dodge is not telling the dealers, as if the change is a bad one and they do not want to scare us about the terrible change, hmmmm???

BTW - the new transmission for the ram 1500 and the dakota is coded "DEJ" - keep that in mind

i've got a 2005 brosure[sp?] downstairs and in it it talks about the 610 engine and a "new" 6 speed manual transmission late avalbility... the getrag g56 is coming

And this surprises you? Tomeygun is among the few dealership personnel who would even care what kind of transmission is in our trucks. I expect that a switch will be common knowledge here long before most dealerships are aware of a change.

Dave

I talked to a couple engineers at Jeep truck engineering 1 works on the new Dakota platform and the other on the HD's. Both said the new 6 speed is in the Dakota and not the 2500-3500's.

The new trans is listed in the parts catalog for the 05's as a G56 Mercedes Benz Manual Transmission 6 Speed. The part numbers for a complete trans have already superceded, even though there is no inventory yet.

Marc

i can't remember quite where i read it, but all the rams will have the g56 manual trans [cost cutting, same for little 5. 7 & ISBe] and there will be a new 6 speed getrag for the jeeps and dakota... hmph, i can't remember where i read it...

My most recent Truck Trend Magazine had an article on the new Getrag 6 shooters and it stated that the heavy dutys will be getting it. I also saw some info on the Popular Mechanics website.

Go get a Petersen's 4WHEEL & off road. December issue page 24. Jeep Liberty and Wrangler get a NSG 370 6 speed and the Dodge Dakota and Ram 1500 get a Getrag 238 6 speed and the 2500 and 3500 get a G56 6 speed. All of these trans. are Aluminum cased. This info. was obtained from Automotive News.

Looks like it is true! 05. 5 CTD get the G56 Getrag! I just got a pdf file that Dodge puts out from Robert Trottmann, that states the Drivetrain specifications.

If anyone would like a copy, Email me and I will send it to you.

Bob, please email the file to me at -- email address removed -- and I'll post it up on my website.

My dealer told me two weeks ago that they cut off ordering for the NV 5600. Maybe it's different here, but if someone wants an NV 5600 ram, they surely won't be able to order that combo in the spring.

I have posted the proof document here:

TRUCK DRIVELINES

It is intersting, the clutch size on the new getrag is 12. 5 inchs...

Page 14 is some good reading (like a higher OD, thats goofy)

The 12. 5" clutch has more contact surface area than the 13"...

It will be interesting to see how DC accomplishes that.

Also, 1st. gear is significantly lower than the NV5600. At idle clutch release should not be a problem, even loaded! Talk about a granny-gear!

actually it does not say "CONTACT SURFACE" does it??

I think I read "Total area (sq in)" -- 119(NV) vs 144(getrag) -- because it is a thinker useable surface each side - (0. 047 VS 0. 1)

hmmmm... .

Total area (sq in) is the same as contact surface. Thickness would only come into play if they used a "cubed" unit.

Basically they decreased the major diameter a little but decreased the minor diameter a lot, thus creating more square inches. The problem is, diameter does more for you than square inches when it comes to holding power.

Unfortunately to make the chart fit, you can't read it

Searching the DaimlerChrysler site, I found something that may very well relieve some tension amongst those nervous about a new transmission.

The G56 is NOT a Getrag.

The G56 is built by DaimlerChrysler Commercial Vehicles Division (CVD, as mentioned in the pdf posted by Tomeygun). It was introduced 2 years ago in Europe and has been hooked to - surprise - the MBE900 diesel, so it should handle the ISB with no problem.

Here is the official photo from Sep 9 2002:
