Why would I wanna FLY when I've got this here dandy Dodge/Cummins?



JEEZE, the POINT here is NOT that computers are worthless or unneeded - only a reality check that they DO introduce increased levels of failure points as their control and complexity increase - and THAT only in regards to how well designed and constructed they are. Remember, the SAME bean counters responsible for cutting corners as in no inner fender wheel wells, underhood blankets and rear floor carpets are the SAME guys who accept bids for engine and transmission controls...



How many issues do we see here daily related to assorted sensor, fuel system or other engine control issues? And how many similar issues did we see in the earlier non-computer trucks? How many guys were capable of troubleshooting the older mechanical trucks, and how many owners of the new trucks - as well as the dealers mechanics - are TOTALLY baffled by engine misses and surges, erratic accellerator issues and radical swings in engine performance?



SURE, this new technology is GREAT when it works - but *I* for one sure wouldn't want to fly in one such as we see too often in our "gee whiz trucks", OR be under it if it goes overhead!



Do *I* like the added power and other features in my '02 as compared to my older '91? You betcha - but the benefits come at a potential price that is always lurking in the back of my mind - and a problem that could have been fixed out on the road with duct tape and baling wire in the OLD truck now takes lots of tools, an EE degree, lotsa test equipment, and endless trouble-shooting to correct - and *NO*, that I *don't* like!

One of the reasons I don't fly and won't (along with not wanting to subject myself to Nazi style treatment at an airport).



Anyway, back to the topic at hand ... what was it automatic transmissions??



Wouldn't an Eaton 6 speed Autoshift be a nice addition to the Dodge lineup for you folks who don't mind all that new-fangled technology.

No flamming intended toward Gary or anyone else.



My point was that in an aircraft controlled by computers, the failure point of a computer induced failure could lead the what the FAA considers a catastrophic failure, which can result in "mutiple deaths and usually loss of aircraft". Granted, the computers and software that operate at this level are not "off-the-shelf" and include redundant systems. Of course, then there are all the computers that run the air traffic control system on the ground too.

Jeeze, that Eaton pointed to up above DOES look neat not much difference in size and weight between it and the NV-5600...
