Hey Guys,

First off, I must say this is a very cool site, and appreciate any help I can get on future questions. There seems to be a wide verity of knowledge on this site. With that said, I have a question:

When I bought my truck back in August, I popped the hood and one of my friends saw a mystery plug just hanging in the engine bay. No one seems to know where it goes, but it doesn’t seem important, because everything is working fine. I have included a pic to help someone identify it.

That looks the plug that goes into the TPS, which is the thing just above it. Reach down and behind where your throttle linkage cable is (as seen in your photo) and you should feel where it goes.

BHale is right, that is the plug for the TPS. It only used on the automatic equipped trucks

Since you have a 5 speed, you don't have a place to plug it in. It just hangs around there.

DOOH!! I should have seen that

Ok, thanks guys

Does this throw the computer off in any way with it not being connected? I must be paranoid, because it looks weird just hanging around there, like it must be connected to something. Once again, thanks for the replies.

cheepies

That's the way they do it. Build one harness for all the trucks, and omit things that it doesn't need. I have found that some people didn't have fog lights, got the switch, found the harnesses, installed the proper fuses and relays, and... . click... . fog lights. Factory wiring and all. It's kinda cool when you can do stuff like that..... kinda bad when you have a wiring problem, and it sure seems like this is supposed to go there... ... ...

LOL, I found yet two more mystery plugs. They are under the front bumper, and are on both the left and right sides. I do have factory fog lights, so it can’t be that, but they appear to be some kind of aux light hookup. Here is a picture of the one under the driver’s side front bumper, next to the horn.

As Josh said it's a one size fits all wiring harness. If you start looking around under the dash you'll find more that aren't connected, might be some on the firewall and by the transmission also. I wouldn't worry about it.

Huh?

Are the fog lights actucally working? Several weeks ago, I reassembled my 1996 after a paint job. I don't recall any additional connectors, and the loose one in the picture sure looks like a fog light connector. I'll crawl under mine in the morning. Keep in mind though, that my experience with a 1996 may not cross over to your 1998.

For a definitive answer, locate and buy a copy of the Daimler Chrysler Technical Service Manual for your year. It'll run about $100 shipped, new. The TSM will have a series of complete wiring diagrams for everything that the factory might install, along with a coding for wire color and plug shape.

I've bought the *factory* TSM for every car I've owned since 1971. (One was in Italian, but the pictures helped. ) I estimate that I've saved $20K or more in repair costs and preventing swindles since then. In my opinion, the Chilton manuals are a waste of money. Haynes manuals are better, but neither will have wiring diagrams. And wiring problems, if they occur, can be vexing and expensive to have fixed.

Come on now,I gave you the best answer at Kauffman's for that plug. "I don't know"... ... :D :D :D ... See Ya in Oct if ya come... . Andy

Plug Behind Bumper

The one behind the bumper is probably the outside temperature sensor on the overhead console. My Cherokees were n the same location. Mike

Yep Matt,

Fog lights work, and the connectors are still a mystery. Do you guys think it might be some kind of hookup for the snow plow lights, because I have the snow plow package?

I have a factory service manual on hold for me, but won’t be able to pick it up until October. I could of used it today, because I did my hi/low beam modification. But luckily it worked fine anyway.

Andy, LOL that was the same answer everybody gave me at the time too. And I will defiantly be at Kauffman's in Oct. BTW any word on the KDP Jig yet?

Mike, It could be the plug for the temp sensor, because I don’t have the overhead temp thing, but why would there be one on both sides?

Thanks for all the replies guys,

Brandon
