Hello guys, whats up? Anyways i was always wanting to join tdr and just got around to doing it. I have a 89 d250 and have had it for around 4 months now. i bought it for 2000 dollars in decent shape. the paints peeling and it had a monstorus wiring problem. After spending 2 days rewireing the entire truck i ended up with about 10 miles of extra wire, about 20 relays, and 10 switches. lol all from the previous owner. the truck only has 65k on it, and im from california which means no rust. anyways heres a few pics of the truck. let me know if ya see anything weird.

oh i forgot to mention a few things. i just had the damn Getrag 360 rebuild because it sheared a few roll pins on the shifter rail as i was driving cross country to indiana from california.

1. after the rebuild it seems like the trans makes alot of noise now, not bearing noise but gear clatter. and it makes quite alot of noise if i bog it a little.

2. i also notice that when the truck is cold (less than 30) the alternator likes to kick in and out of charging for a few minutes (my amp guage doesnt work but i notice the lights dim in and out).

3. when im accelerating in 2nd and 3rd i feel a vibration coming out of the drivetrain, it almost seems like my center support bearing is gone.

4. my maximum speed in 5th is 85mph, is it because i have a real short rear gear or is this normal?

5. how much weight should i put in the back of this thing? someone told me i have 1-ton running gear too. damn is this thing *** happy in the snow.

The dimming lights are normal. Your electrical system be under one heck of a load with the grid heat on/off/on/off untill she is warmed up a tad.

The top speed is normal as well. WE all drive around at about 55/60 mph anyhow so what's the problem? No, seriously, you have a lot of work to do to that injection pump to wake her up from her current slumber.

The manual transmission. Yep, she will moan and growl at high loads. Most noticable when you lug it. It's fun to short shift into 4th at 30 and plant the throttle, fill four lanes of traffic with smoke, but the transmission ain't lik'n that.

Hey OKish and welcome to TDR... For your Vib problem in your drive train, look at all your U-Joints. I've replaced two and they'll vibrate your teeth out if they get bad enough. That's a nice find though, ecspecially with 65,000 on it... GOOD LUCK

Welcome OKish Oo.

All that you mentioned sounds pretty normal from what I know. I also have a 1 ton rear axle... . just remember that when you go to buy drums, brakes parts, etc. The parts counter guys won't have a clue. . been there.

A few turns on the old gov stop will get that puppy to triple digits if you want it. I spend a lot of expressway time at 75 so I like a little reserve speed available LOL ;)

Enjoy the ride!

Jay

"sounds pretty normal from what I know"

Ahhh... ..... Jay? What is it that YOU know exactly?

You do know that you let your guard down on that one... ... ... ... ... :-laf Must be "your" current state of slumber :D

OKish... ..... I forgot to say "WELCOME"... .

:-laf :-laf

Next he'll be sending me more hazelnuts!!!

all the u-joints were checked when put the transmision back in. i had one diesel mechanic tell me to shim the driveshaft support bearing? any truth in that?

welcome to tdr, I was in your position about 2 years ago, and have found countless amounts of invaluable info here, use the search funtion, it'll be your best friend! I also have an '89 from cal, it is an auto though, I'm jealous of yours. it had 144,000 on it when I got it, but had already been painted... if you want some specific tuning advice from trial and error I have found with that year non intercooled cummins , let me know

Nick
