Hey! Guys! Im new to the TDR but have been reading the posts lately. I have seen mention of old smoky's fuel pin. I am curious about availability, price and performace. I am pleased with the gains but adjusting mine but you always want more right! Is it a drop in installation. If they arent still available were can i find something similar.

REDDODGE,

Welcome to the land of the wacky 1st genners.

Sounds like you have a plan... . but please put up a signature so we can see what you've got.

Jay

Go to your User Control Panel and list type of truck, transmission, and engine mods.

The Old Smoky fuel pin will ad 30 or so HP, and makes the truck accelerate a lot better. He is a member here, you can PM him, although he's been pretty busy lately.

sorry i'm still getting everything set up ill put up a pic too when i figure it out. I see some 91's are not intercooled mine is. did that happen partway through 91

If yours is intercooled it is called a 91. 5 around here. They changed in the middle of the year and added the intercooler.

All I gotta say is... watch for the guy with the green flatbed. He's does nothing but post all day!

He does a lot of talking, but he doesn't say much.

Hey there RedDodge,

Welcome to the ranch..... don't be afraid to ask if you don't know... it's how we keep in practice ourselves... . :D:D:D

Pastor Bob - Our Lady Of Acceleration Church... ;):D

a local trans shop said a cummins with the pump tweaked will flash the torque converter and not holdCan i benefit from a newTC

I haven't done anything to my transmission and i dyno'd at 206 rwhp and i know that there is other people that have dyno'd more than that with the stock TC. That shop is trying to make some money on you it sounds like. You could benefit from a new TC but you don't need it.

Chris

Find a new transmission shop. That one doesn't know anything about a first gen setup. As you get into this you will see what I mean.

Welcome to the zoo! This is the best bunch of guys here and are lots of help.

:)

Flash the torque converter? Hadnt heard that one, but my knowledge of autos is I HATE how they pull, thus get rid of it ASAP. Seriously, I have to agree with cguthrie, though I am not the one to trust when the idea of a shop making a fast buck comes up- I think 99% of them are around for that very purpose.

Welcome to the TDR. With your auto, I would start saving for a TPS- or learn how to clean it out and reassemble it. The transmission should take the PODs and housing, but it will have a higher stall speed- just ask the Pastor about that. There are several vendors here that can fix you up when the time comes. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this- get a pyrometer, boost gauge (40psi or better- mine pegs the 40 I have), and transmission temp gauge. Then learn how to drive by them.

Watch for the guy from MO to, he's a nut!

Ok, so now the two guys you have to watch out for is the one with the flatbed, and the irritable one from MO! :-laf

thanks for the info the guy sounded bogus,i was a car nut and i understand that we are dealing with much more torque so i thought id ask

Welcome REDDODGE. I assume your's is red, as are mine. I was wondering were in IL you live. I currently live just west of the Quad Cities IA, and venture into IL quite often.

As far as the auto I think the key to long life it to keep it cool, and don't slip the heck out of the convertor; ie heavy trailer, soft ground, and lots of rpm without spinning the tires. I have one auto in my 90 and the getrag in my 93.

Once again welcome and have fun!

Michael

Hi Red'.....

The transmission is a weak link, no doubt about it. But you know... not much has changed really...

Right from the very start, whether stick or auto, they seem to be able to take perhaps another 60-70 rear wheel HP over stock as the upper limits of long term reliability.

Anyway, the stall on our TC's is (according to the book) 1700-1900 RPM.

The higher you push your HP the higher the stall will get, until finally you just push right thru it and roast the little booger...

If you have the bucks, the aftermarket full meal deal is THE way to go. All I can say (to be brief) is I figure I was loosing 30% of my $$$ and my HP upgrades between the engine and the rear wheels...

The difference is truly day and night.

Now, you can push the ole girl up to about 225-240 RWHP and still have some measure of reliabilty.

Have a good service done on it. Full check out,,, including line pressures, and adjustment if needed.

There is an "acceptable range" for your trans. 'idle line pressure' and your wide open line pressure.

Have your shop set both at roughly 75%-80% of that max value.

This will help reduce the likelyhood of pushing a seal out or damaging one.

Next, use a more aggressive ATF. Try Dexron type II.

It has less friction modifiers in it and will help to firm up your shifts.

If you want to go synthetic then I'd suggest a semi-synthetic. They are very "slippery" oils and result in more slippage on each shift and while in each gear... especially under higher HP levels.

The tip about the TPS is a good one. We've got some pretty detailed stuff in here on that topic. Do a search and make yourself familiar with it.

Since your truck is gettting on in years, it can help on initial startup to put the trans in "N" for the initial warm up too.

This will allow more oil flow to charge the trans lines/valve body/TC etc, even though our transmission's apparently do pump oil while in "P".

Well, that's about as confused as I can make it for now... .
