and so far it looks like it accomplished what i hoped for ... lower EGT at WOT. just running this AM with my PE on HOT level 3 where before my gauge was buried at 1500 by 60mph , i was passing 80 mph and the needle was settling at 1400 ... the lag with the 93% TC doesn't seem to bad , i can live with it , but i will be swapping back to a 91% soon .

now i just need to fiddle with the wastegate and figure out how to get a silencer ring in it .

13's here i come , guess i can step up to supermentals now

Hi John

Why did you choose the HX-40 over the Piers Modified HX35 Super Turbo?

Trying to collect as much info as possible.

Thanks,

Bob

Hes got more power then the Piers turbo is "slated" for. Yes you can use the PDR turbo ..... but it still gets a lil warm, Piers said keep it at 35psi for effciency reasons... ...

Its the same reason i am going to a KwikKurt HX40... . moves more volume of air... . less effort = more topend.

Anything under 375 to 400hp the PDR turbo is the ticket. I run mine with 450hp and it works just have to watch the EGT gauge. It all depends on how much hp you intend to add and what you use your truck for. New turbo should be on tommorrow.

John -

Does it feel stronger on the topend now?

I've been running around with this modified HX40/14cm for a couple of weeks now. The top end is much stronger, you can feel the pull in upper rpm's at WOT. Like John,I can get to 75-80 and it takes longer to get the gauge above 1350.

John -

Is that a stock HX40 or modified? Which housing you running? I'm trying a 12cm first. What are you wastegated at? I'm gonna set mine at 40psi.

so many questions ... get a beer this is long ...

bob , i talked to peirs and we figured i was making to much HP with everything on to get the benifit i was looking for , lower EGT with his turbo . massdiesel has a superturbo on his truck with a 14 housing , it does spool up very quick .

kat , i've got a wastegated 16 4" outlet housing . completely stock out of the box ...

at work i have the majestic screwed up turbo in as many pieces that you can break it down to . majestic sent it back to me this way when i refused to pay their ransome to fix it . they claim my oil is comtaminated and it caused the turbo to fail . thats funny , my original turbo was working fine when i pulled it off , plus i have now had 3 different turbos on my truck since then , 2 with the same oil that supposedly killed that 40 , no problems , my oil pressure is good . if the oil was as bad as they say i would think i'd need a rebuild on my engine . i'm sending a sample of it out just to see what is in there that supposedly killed it . according to my talks with hemidart , they told him the same thing , his oil caused the failure , but they fixed his . which from what i can tell from his posts was still broken when he put it back on . one thing i noticed with a couple other turbos vs the majestic modified unit was when i put oil in the top it didn't take more than a minute for it to come out the drain side , on the stock hx40 and a piers unit it took over 5 minutes to see it go down from being flush with the top of the boss that the oil line fitting screws into . also the 40 that broke had such a whine and an incredible amount of lag compared to this one .

ok on to more questions ...

kat mine is set to open fully at 40 psi , it begins to open at 20psi , it comes from holset set this way and the adjuster is peened the same as the dodge unit . i'm going to give piers a ring and ask him about setting it , i have one that has the peen defeated and can be adjusted . top end is very good , as is the midrange , it doesn't spool as quickly as my 35 w/12 , but it piulls stronger with less boost . speaking of boost , once it begins to spool up it will hit the max boost , highest i have seen is 40 , at alot less throttle than the 35 , half throttle gets it to 35 and then some , except for the whine this thing kicks a$$ .

work2much , i'll make note of where it starts to build boost tomorrow plus i'll get a chance to see how it tows , i'm renting a bobcat and towing it to and from the rental place .

it peaks at 40 but for some bizarre reason it drops back to 30 quickly , i wonder if it has something to do wit hthe wastegate being open early ? i'm goign to pop on my bleed elbow in the AM and see if it affects it any ?

this is with the dd3's and hot pe only , no EZ , i just bought one off a member that sold his truck , i'll have it next week and be back at peak hp , i am going to try to hit a dragstrip when i go to maryland this weekend , borrow an EZ and see what i get for a time , should be a 13 , as long as i figure out my no 2-3 WOT shift before then ...

miker interesting note on egt wit hthe kwikspool , from what i could tell it was lower than a 35/12 , but not as good as a 4" oulet 40 housing , i may have to get one to try out , but for now the big plus is no more 1500* banzi runs , for now ...

Is that a HX-40, or are you just happy to see me???

So you got the HX-40 huh? What are your plans for that weak little HX-35??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey Mopar, I just installed my new PDR Super Turbo (that I made REALLY Super :D)... with my DD3s and DD TTPM (set to the 3 psi setting) and DTT 93% TC, I have absolutely NO turbo lag. EGTs while cruising the same roads at the same speeds and conditions have been reduced. Tell me, how does it get any better than that? Oh, did I forget mention the increase in performance? :D

Why would you want to "live" with the turbo lag and sluggish performance where you drive most of the time????

As soon as I can get my photographer friend to help me post a pic I will show ya my new turbo (p. s. have your sunglasses ready). :D

Hey John, Rob tells me that turbo looks pretty nice :) Too bad I missed ya last Sunday, but I may be over that way again soon.

I suspect the PDR would work pretty nicely with the 14cm housing, I would think that would be a good setup for your power levels. I can image the :D on your face driving that thing now

Bob Wagner,

I took my HX40 off because I was going to get a travel trailer, (which I finally did) because spooling up at 1700 rpm's wasn't going to cut it. During Diesel Thunder in Spokane, I gave Piers my HX35 12cm to perform his magic on. I put it on before BD Dyno days in October, I still put out 427 HP on the Mustang Dyno. The performance of Piers Super Turbo for towing and in-town driving is much better than the HX40. If you are looking for pure HP numbers or top end speed, the HX40 is the way to go, but if you do alot of in-town driving or towing you are going to want Pier's Super Turbo. I am very pleased with Pier's Super Turbo, he said that he should have some 14cm non-wastegated housing very soon, so I'll probably try one of those with it. EGT's are about 100 degrees higher, but I don't drive around with my foot to the floor all the time:eek: , just most of the time. :D At least that's what Kathy says.

By the way, slow down going through Mose Lake, I got my second speeding ticket there going to BD Dyno Days. :(

John,

I forgot to mention that your turbo pictures look sharp. I can't wait to see it on your truck. Sunglasses will be in order! Will you carry a couple pairs of sunglasses for those who forget? You might want to consider your liability of blind someone with that engine compartment!:D

well that's all good, but no $ for the ice-cream man

MikeR,

I know I am just trying to get one that someone has no want for because being a college student I am too poor to buy one.

John  WOW

Very nice! I see Rob wasn't kidding at all! Evan says you stopped by the Power Shop to show it off too :)

the 40 ROCKS ;)

second time, i just erased my novel

john , thats way to pretty for my truck . i was trying to win the ugliest truck at the maryland event this past weekend , still sporting my spare , haven't washed it in a week and duct tape on my air filter to turbo hose from a blowout while looking for a boost leak ... mine ain't a pretty site when standing still  ... that will look good on your showboat :D:p

as far as why i would live with the lag ??? because its to much of a pain to switch back and forth , plus drop all the extra cake to have a Super Turbo also ... but then again if i had a super turbo , and some piping and and ATS manifold i could have the best of both worlds ... TWINS ... that is a thought ...

i put on the DD elbow ... 48psi of boost  no problem running PE in level HOT #3 ... i still have my HOT HOT PE ... wonder how that will work at the track ???

the lag ain't so bad , i had someone drive my truck that drove someone elses truck that had an hx40 and not as tight a TC as mine . he said mine is some much better than the other ... must be all the fuel ?? :D:D

tx , sorry , the 35 is my live spare , i hate being broken down and at the mercy of some chevy driving buffum. i had the 35 and my other down pipe in the back of the truck on my 1000 mile round trip this past weekend , just in case ...

did i miss anything ???

Thanks for the kind words guys. :) It RREEAALLLLYY looks better "in person".

Piers told me the other day... "If you're not completely satisfied with your new Super Turbo. . just return it for a "full" ( ) refund". lol... ya right! Thanks Piers... I'd bet you'd just love that wouldn't you?! :D:D:D:D
