for whats its worth..... I change my fuel filter every 7500 miles (every oil change) rather its needed or not... . my pump still died @ 45K miles (see above)

What MOST people don't understand is the fact the filter does nothing to PROTECT the LP... any dirt in the tank gets pumped through the LP... it is forced to grind up sand in order to pass it... you could change the filter every day, and the pump is still going to grind up dirt that must pass with the fuel to the filter...

Look under the hood & under the fuel filter canister. If you don't see the lift pump there then it's in the tank. I don't think they started putting them in the tank until 05 but I could be mistaken.

Doesnt matter where the lift pump is ,in tank or on engine , its not getting filtered fuel just as Steved says. Dirt and crud is grinding these pumps up. Depends on driveing conditions as to how much crud gets in tank. As I stated before your tank is wide open at that elbow . Get under there with a flashlight and a mirror and look.

when the filter gets plugged it causes the lift pump to work harder causing shorter pump life iamb sure sucking dirt through the pump doesent help either.

My fuel mileage has started to drop, could it be the lift pump? Can the dealer check to see if the pump is going bad or do I have to wait until it takes a dump and leaves me on the side of the road. :(

It could be the lift pump or just carboned up injectors (probably both). Don't wait! Be proactive and replace the lift pump now before it leaves you stranded and starves your CP3. There are many fine aftermarket solutions to choose from (FASS, Gypsyman's Walbro, RASP). Pick your favorite and "git 'r done".

I chose to go Walbro (with a prefilter to protect the pump), and now I'm sleeping much better at night! ;)

PS - Then buy some SeaFoam to clean out any carbon.
