I have a 98. 5 with about 45,000. I just installed a 4 wire blue box last week. I didnt even make it 10 miles. After full trottle I let off and motor shut off. pulled everything off and towed to dealer. Turns out lift pump tested bad. less than 3 psi. Dealer replaced it first and it still no go. They then got permission to put on a new injector pump. The mechanic told me that he had to get permission to replace the pump and they realy harased him about looking for marks in the wires. I got lucky this time, all under warenty!!!!!!!!! My question is what are the chances of the injector pump going again when i hook up the blue box back up. I am worried the next time it is going to hurt in the wallet!

98. 5 , open airbox, straight pipe, banks turbo housing, 4 wire blue box, egt, boost. Fuel gauge on the way!

pump failures

krussell. . Your'e lift pump was probably already dead or dying. . When this happens, The VP44 injector pump is then sucking the fuel so you don't know you have a problem. With the addition of the fueling box the strain on the injector pump was too much, and thus failed also. I keep preaching this, and that is, everyone should install a fuel pressure gauage on the get go along with the pyro, and boost. You can then monitor fuel pressure as a bench mark, and as you add injectors, fueling boxes, turbo's etc. you will notice a reduction in fuel pressures. When monitoring continuely, you will know of a potential lift pump failure, fuel filter problem before it causes any serious costly repairs. I know, as I have replaced two lift pumps and two injector pumps because of not monitoring my fuel pressures. A failed lift pump is around $160. 00, a failed injection pump is around $1500. 00. A good fuel pressure (auto meter) mechanical gauage in cab costs around $150. 00. When your dealer doesn't warrant it anymore it can get costly..... Heber

Thanks for the info. I did notice engine power seemed to fade and then come back on and off as i drove for the last few thousand miles. I am guessing the lift pump may have been bad for some time. I have a fuel pressure gauge on order. This is the greatest website! I have learned more about my cummins in a few nights than I could of ever hoped to learn from dealers and friends. Keep up the good work!
