installed my new injectors last week, they are bosch 190's from piers. . hell of a time getting number 6 injector out, heavy build up on injector body. . truck runs great, made a 1000 mile trip and averaged just over 18. 7 mpg. . truck empty and driving about 70 mph... one thing i have noticed is i have a heavier diesel smell now, i did have to speed up the idel. . so is it time to advance the pump timing ???. . i think it is still at stock setting... what changes will i get if i advance the timing... ??? fuel screw is about 11/2 turns in, star wheel somewhere in the middle i think... i'm new at this diesel stuff... any help... ... thanks.

no fuel leaks, engine was cleaned after installing new injectors... when truck is ideling you get the diesel smell... all i can think of is more fuel going in and not being burnt... was thinking if pump timing advanced maybe it would burn more of the fuel... ???

Any uprated injector, in fact any stock injector, can benefit from some timing advance.

I'm sure you've read up on this item so just keep an eye on your settings/results etc and you'll be fine.

The increased timing will help with EGTs a bit, provide better throttle response and should help to improve (slightly) your mileage.

When you do increase the pump timing you will also see less smoke and you will also notice a change in the exhaust smell.

pb... .

thanks pastor bob... thats what i thought, so i will find a shop here to advance the timing... and just give it a check over... .

Rfox,

save yourself the money, get a 1/2" crows foot for the nut under the pump, and do the advance yourself. Loosen the three bolts on the pump housing, and the 10mm nut on the rear bracket and move the pump up about 1/16 in (on the flange vs pump housing). You can put the $100 you saved in the fuel tanke and enjoy the better MPGs.
