I always use 3rd gear when pulling any substantial grades. Last year I got in a bit of a jam on the Siskyous when I was pulling in 3rd gear in the #1 lane and had a truck next to me in the #2 lane when an OTR truckers came into my lane from the shoulder to go around a disabled truck. I was right around 50 MPH and had to let off because of the slow moving truck and didn't have enough umpffff to get around him when the #2 lane cleared so I could get over. I think I topped that grade at about 40 MPH!! That was the main reason I went with the turbo and injector upgrades, to give myself that extra bit of power for circumstances such as this and to help me keep my speed up to at least the 55 MPH speed limit on those grades. This next trip will tell me more about what I need to do. . maybe just a 14 or 16 exhaust housing?

Buff,

Yeah, those ones around Grants pass are pretty long grades. Have you considered making the changes to run an exhaust brake? It makes the Siskyous not bad at all. Of course I have the 6 speed, so the exhaust brake really makes those hills easy. I did the Siskyous last December with a 12K 5ver without any problems.

I have a BD exhaust brake, would not be without it towing my fiver. I topped the grades at about 50 MPH and then never touch the services brakes all the way down... best bomb I have ever done to my truck!
