Thanks, TDR Staff

Droving the Ford makes me love my Ram more

Different makes diesel badges...

This looks like this will be the motor in the 2003 Rams.

I tried to enlarge it a bit.

From info runnig around at the Cummins site, and Dodge claiming more HP/Torque, AND quieter motor, it could be a good possibility that this is actually a 2003 motor...

Comments??

EDIT: UGH!,, LOOK AT WHERE THAT OILFILTER IS!

Looks good to me. Oil filter down low where it drains into the catch pan, not the suspension. Starter no more difficult than before (still not difficult). When's the last time you had to pull a camshaft for a failure? Think of all the open space for intercoolers and accessories! No tears here.

ESSENTIALLY, in many respects, they've just turned the engine around backwards - swapped the rear bellhousing to the front, etc - that filter ISN'T the oil filter - it's the FUEL filter I bet... I wonder where the water pump is located - and you dern well better HOPE you never need service anything camshaft or related - you'll have to remove the whole engine to DO it!

YUP, a giant step BACKWARDS - in more ways than one... :p ;)

EURO version

That picture is of a euro motor, the water pump is in the same location. If your looking for the starter, it's on the exhaust side of the motor. Above the fuel filter is the gear driven air compressor. Common rail is going to be the downfall of BOMBimg as we know it.

The 2003 I saw on Wed 10-10-01, the engine looked nothing like that, and I saw it from underneath rear drivers side.

cam change ...

though it would be easier on a lift , the cam change wouldn't require engine removal , you pull your trans and everything is right there , probably easier and faster than the 17 hrs i hear the book gives for labor on the present ISB .

as far as common rail killing us , it will just run injector cost to the moon just like the ford guys . don't get me wrong , its not something i am looking forward to .

as far as dodges claim of more HP and torque , i remember we dodge owners being sold that same line of crap with our current engines , if i hadn't BOMBed i'd still be waiting to find their claims ...

lawdog , where did you see the 2003 ??? i hear its the same as the current 2002 1500 . god i hope not , that is one fugly truck , and still no real crewcab ...

I was hopeing to get on of the 4 door cummins when thay came out... ... ... ... ... But I looked at a 4 door 1500 a few days ago and thay are so ugly. The back seat is just about as small as my current 3500 and the box is smaller. What a joke. As much as I hate fords it looks like that would be my only choice for my next truck . I am a old chevy person but I will not own a isusu engine. I bought my cummins 3500 for the engine. As if the extenda cab wasnt small enought. Now we lose the box space. What is dodge doing???????????

engine for a bus

I believe this particular engine application is for a bus... . engine in rear, hence much easier to work on. Makes much more sense!

The Bosch injectors are not as expensive, because only the control mechanism is in them, not the pumping mechanism.

It should not end bombing at all. instead, it'll make it a bit more sophisticated, in that you have to modify the injectors for more flow and/or change the fuel and timing curves.

It's nothing different from the ISB as far as bombing goes.

In fact, bombing may become cheaper and easier than it was before. Especially since the chance of ruining your injection pump has basically vanished.

Mopar-Muscle,

I saw the truck in Clinton Twp, MI, which is a Detroit suburb. The truck was driven by a DC employee from th Chrysler Tech Center (CTC) in Auburn Hills, MI, About 30 miles away.

The truch was in mask on the front and rear , but the doors were not. The doors and cab look identical to the new 1500 for 2002. The guy was pretty secretive while speaking to him about the truck. I tried but he would not say about the Dually bed if was a one piece like the GM or if it had attached fenders like the current ones. The truck DID have a SOLID axle though in the front, the same as the current 4X4's, and a full 8' bed...
