You know you're from Jersey when . . . you don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges. " You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags. A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter. You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven. You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 A. M. You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery. At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from. You know what a "jug handle" is. You know that WaWa is a convenience store. You know that the state isn't all farmland. You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey--there's the shore--and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore. " And when you are there, you're not "at the shore"; you are "down the shore. " You know how to properly negotiate a circle. You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving. You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (try . . . Mexico . . . York . . . Hampshire-- doesn't work, does it?). You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich. You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege. You don't think "What exit?" is very funny. You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different. " Yes they are! You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton--that's for out-of-staters. The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar. You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls. You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers. Every year you have at least one kid in your class named Tony. You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits. You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall. You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to Belmar, and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way. You weren't raised in New Jersey--you were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey. You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state. You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamberger's and Orbach's. You also remember Palisades Amusement Park. You've had a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries. You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February. …And finally . . . You've NEVER, NEVER pumped your own gas.

You could come back ya know..... you are going to starve out there.....

Like you can get a decent bagel in Colorado..... what do they do put about a tablespoon of cream cheese rather then a 1/4 inch slab on it :-laf

People from west of the Delaware river think a decent Deli is a chain store called Subway.

The Peace Corps actually trains their people in Camden because of its third world conditions.

Manufacturing started in Paterson NJ with the advent of the locomotive. Ford really just perfected it. I can't remember the deal with Colt though. Was he the first guy to use interchangeable parts?

Also in Paterson is a monument to Lou Costello.

Pal's Diner from Ramsey is now in Grand Rapids Michigan. I forget where Rosie's went. For those old enough to remember "The Quicker Picker Upper". I'm not a football fan but I always knew who Rosie Grier was

The movie "Diner" although filmed in Baltimore used a diner from a diner company in Oakland NJ.

Road to Perdition was filmed at the Englewood Diner.

Boys on the Side was filmed at the Bendix Diner in Hasbrouck Heights. As where 2 other films whose titles temporarily escape my mind. It was also used as a whistle stop by Presidential Bob Dole during the final 24 hours of his campaign.

Trixter filmed one of their video's at the Surburban Diner in Paramus. I think it was "Give it to me good".

All of these diners are within 10 miles of my house :D

Rosies Diner is also in Michigan. Rockford to be precise:

http://www.rosiesdiner.com/

I've had the pleasure of eating there as well as Pals.

While I would never move back to Jersey (a nice home on 17 acres for under $120,000 kind of spoils a guy), there are some things I dearly miss:

-Real delicatessens

-Good restaurants

-Shopping opportunities

-Real Bakeries

-Real diners (We used to stop at Rosie's at 4 am for coffee and a buttered roll)

-THE WOMEN!!

Roy

(born and bred in Hackensack)

P. S. A Jersey native missing from the above list is Tara Reid  :) Also astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, General "Stormin" Norman Schwartzkopf.

Also known as "The Armpit of the East". As bad as the People's Republic of Maryland I hate leaving it to head North. Driving in Jersey is an adventure! :-laf

Easy there Tractorface. A little "civility" please- this 'aint the 3rd Gen Forum :D :-laf

I won't be moving back any time soon. I do get back to visit every so often. I miss the seafood and a true submarine sandwich. I worked at Elsie's Subs in Red Bank during high school and to me it is THE standard to which all others must try to match.

One other item missing from the list:

"HURRICANE PARTIES!"

EDIT:

How old are these stats? With all the imports from China and the continuous stream of container laden trains headed east from LA to Wal-Mart DCs, I find the 80% hard to believe.

:-laf :-laf Civilty and New Jersey in the same sentence :-laf :-laf

Ok I did laugh once while driving in Jersey. The sign outside the restaurant said "If there is a better chicken The _______ got him" Can't remember what the blank was now but remember it was funny. Surely one of the "Natives" on this forumn knows what I am talking about.

Oh Yeah and there was the time I got lost in Philly and ended up on the Jersey side of the Bridge and had the hardest time getting my way again because I was twisting my head around to look at all the signs for strip clubs. (No Puns Intended)

None of the maps we bought in Jersey were worth a damn either. Guess no map makers actually visit jersey.

Quick Joke

"Why wasn't Christ born in Jersey"... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... They could not find three wise men and a virgin :-laf :-laf

Sorry

JJ- I do not know how old it is. I got the e-mail from my sister (she grew up in NJ too but lives in FLA) Some of the items pertaining to numbers may have changed, but most of the other stuff is relevant to those who know (knew) the State :)

Excelent comback! :D

I have heard the 3 wise men bit also said about NY too, But we'll answer to it as well.

My favorite one about NJ:

Why are New Yorkers so depressed?... ... Because the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey :D

Grew up in West Orange, now in Ocean county. Witness protection. :-laf

First twin astronauts were Scott and Mark Kelly, I went to school with them. I also went to school with Ian Zering. He was in the Beverly hills 90210 I think(never watched it)... . well anyway he's an actor.

Pals Cabin, I think it's still there, across from where Korvetts was.

"You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamberger's and Orbach's. "

Yea, my Dad actually can tell you when they had guns hanging in the windows (Bambergers sold guns too!)in the stores in Newark. That was a LOOOOONNNG time ago.

I actually went hunting with my Dad up north. I'm sure there aint much of that now.

I remember when rt 280 was being put in. I lived 3 blocks from it, and when they were blasting through the rock it was pretty cool. :D

Used to ride my bicycle to Newark, Belleville, south orange, and to Slegers and Forbes on Rt 10. I wore bicycles out. :D

I think the unions stopped a LOT of the imports in NJ's ports. Longbeach Ca is the busiest now.

Tractorface- that does it, your Jersey Visa is voided. I will have you met at the bridge. :-laf

What. . no mention of the Stone Pony? One guess as to the best Bakeries (& Coffee). . and it aint a guess. We have the best water. In most other places yeast will not rise because the water is so bad.

As far as the Two Guys... well "one" of those guys was an old customer of mine. (Bit of a Jerk actually)And when you pass Mercer Mall, Deptford Mall, Freehold Raceway (remember the fire?) or any K-Mart in our border, walk on the floor in St Catherine's or buy groceries at Shop Rite or Foodtown, I want you to smile and think about my dad. I do. He built 'em.

I have met Travolta. Coolest guy you would ever want to meet, but when he pulled the "You From Jerzee?" phrase, I had to stop him before he asked what exit. Good stuff-

(Born & Lived in Freehold for 30 years)

Oh- another Jersey fact you missed. Did you ever wonder where the War2 German SS officers stole their uniform style from? You can thank the New Jersey State Police.

Ha how ya doin'

I grew up and lived there for 35 years (Paterson, Old Bridge, East Brunswick) lived around for the next twenty + years(mostly California, on the coast). Still miss the people and food from NJ (Rutt's Hut for one). The weather and real estate taxes are the reasons I don't return. Tired of the all the people who think Joe Piscopo (SNL) thing is it. Also the jealous ones from the landlock places--but we got a lake. You know who you are. People don't make fun of your state because who cares!

Cmon none knows the rest of that Chicken sign?? It is driving me nuts

Where is Old Jersey???? Always wondered this.

Don't know about the chicken sign, but old Jersey is in England. Many east coast cities starting with New are cities in Great Britain, not to mention other European countries that colonized the early U. S.

Our family heritage goes back to at least 1850 with roots in NJ, my grandparents were both born there in 1886 and 1889, married in 1917 (after Grandpa came back from the war) and lived in Jersey City until they passed away in 1974 and 1976.

Dad graduated from Henry Snyder High in 1942 ( he went to school with Frank Sinatra's first wife). Dad used to cut school to go play cards with Sinatra in Lincoln Park in Jersey City in the late 1930's and early 40s. Grandma hated Frank Sinatra as he would often "borrow" money for carfare or Subways to get into Brooklyn where he was performing, and never paid her back...

I went to kindergarten and first grade in 1957-58 at I believe PS 24 in Jersey City, we were living with Grandma and Grandpa while Dad was stationed in Thule, Greenland with USAF.

I remember visiting the Grandparents for their 50 year anniversary in 1967 and looking out my bedroom window in the attic, where I could see the World Trade Towers under construction.

My aunt and now deceased uncle owned a great little deli on Old Bergen Road around the corner from the Catholic School and I can recall helping them out at the store. The deli is long gone. they sold it in 1968, when I last drove past the store front in 2000, I think it was a video store.

Dad passed away in 2001, but I still have an Aunt in Lakehurst ( who owned the deli), also an Uncle in Manasquan, and cousins in Avon-By the Sea.

Another aunt (on Mom's side) was living in the same building as one of the original terrorists in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Towers, I remember visiting her in 1992 and walking down to the grocery store on Bergen Ave one evening and hearing a ruckus from an upstairs window, I looked up to see a Muslim rally being conducted by that blind sheikh who was later implicated in the WTT bombings of 1993.

I can recall driving south on the GSP or the Turnpike from Jersey City and it seemed like it took for ever to get past the refineries and the power plants, and the odor was horrific!!!!!!

Gotta get back there in the next year or so to visit the aunts and uncle, as they are getting along in years,

Jersey was a great place 40 years ago and holds great memories, too bad its 3000 miles away!!!!!!!!

big jake

THE FORD GUY Oo. Oo. Oo.

My Fathers Aunt (my Great Aunt?) would let Sinatra in the movies for free. She lived in Newark, on So. Orange ave.

Edit: Upon further review of my mind  , it was Jerry Lewis. My bad! :-laf

One of my favorite places is Ocean City, NJ. My parents (and their parents) grew up in Philly. My grandfather lived in Cape May after he retired. We lived in upstate NY until I was 10. So going to the shore was something I grew up with. I've taken my family to Ocean City for a week twice in the past 4 years. It's funny, when I tell people we're going to NJ for vacation, they don't know what that really means. Out here they think NJ is just a suburb of NYC. My daughter loves Ocean City now too. Ahhh... I could go for a Kohr's Frozen Custard. :D
